    Scanlan’s Lane no contest.
It’d be great if the city commissioned some good local artists to revive these derelict areas. Personally I’d rather see 40 grand go to murals downtown than a few more paintings/photographs for city hall.

I was being a little facetious here (I mean, really, no contest) but I imagine the folks at city hall aren’t too happy with this new graffiti on Scanlan’s Lane after spending $1.1 million on fixing it up. It just recently was opened after a year of construction: http://thescope.ca/log/scanlons-lane-work-finally-in-progress

    Another fight: “Scanlon’s” vs “Scanlan’s”?

There are far too many derelect areas in the downtown,in particular the central area of Duckworth around McBrides Hill which is in dire need of reitalizing.I’d love to see more of the wonderfully colourful graffiti that is in Scanlan’s Lane.St.John’s is city that is obviously known for it talented artists but they powers that be don’t seem to want to support anything that is young and not traditional. We need to support it and liven things up downtown otherwise things will continue deterirate in the deadzones and the arts scene will grow stale if we don’t champion and show support to our younger artists.Their work and their ideas are just as valid as the old guards!

I’m pretty sure that work was commissioned by the owners of the Bar None/Scanlan’s building.

Well, this is an unfair argument since the second piece of art is totally dilapidated. That said, they are both works of art and St. John’s would benefit from having more of both around. Go graffiti art and murals go!!

Not really a fair fight as the second piece is badly in need of repair. If the city if going to pay for murals or outside art of any type they should take care of the upkeep as well!

The majority of people in St.John’s love the Scalan’s alley, the city council on the otherhand are conerned that this type of public art makes the downtown “look bad”. So what’s what’s better, a vibrantly decorated alley adorned with public art by gifted artists or a bare grimy old brick alleyway with some verbal ditritus scrawled on it about the size of someones cock or who the lateat slut is? I think the answer is pretty obvious but the City Council are far too conservative to see that. They don’t want to fix a city that in alot of ways is very much broken. No recycling, no bike lanes, no public art, this council seems to resemble the federal Conservative. We have elected a council comepletely out of touch with what it’s citizens actually want.

Scanlan’s lane. McBride’s Hill is too old and washed out.

I have never understood the McBride’s Hill mural – why does the old guy have half a hamburger on his head?
