Wasn’t mummering illegal for a while?

Wasn’t mummering illegal for a while? Why? Didn’t somebody get murdered? Why did it comeback? Are we safe?

I’m pretty sure it’s always illegal to go out in public with your face masked, but the cops haven’t shut down Halloween yet.

Still I don’t think the old outport tradition of being welcomed into random houses will work out very well in a city of almost 200000.

It’s illegal to cover your face in public?? Really?? And which law would that be under. They sell all sorts of winter clothing that covers your entire face, which I assume wouldn’t happen if this were illegal.

I’ve been noticing that whenever someone asks a legal question here there is always some “Anonymous” person that continues to speak as if they wrote the book of law, yet never provide any evidence of their position.

No, it is not illegal to cover your face in public. And if someone believes it is could they please provide some evidence to support their claim.

Just wanted to add what I found online:

“mummering or janneying in Newfoundland was banned in 1861.That Christmas a man in St. John’s was murdered by a mob allegedly disguised as mummers or janneys. The law stated that anyone participating in the practice would be subject to seven days in jail.”

But it is perfectly legal to be in public with your face covered in pretty much all other cases: winter clothing, religious clothing, etc.

A lot of places like shopping malls do have rules posted by their doors though and they usually say no hoodies or things like that. But as for just being out in public you’re free to do as you please as long as you’re not mummering I guess.

Seven days in jail? I think that is definitely worth the risk. I’ll still go mummering every year. I don’t think it’s illegal, anyways. As far as I know it has been banned a few times, but the ban has been lifted each time, but a lot of people still seem to think it is illegal. This article mentions one of the more recent bans that was lifted: http://www.thetelegram.com/Arts—Life/2010-12-11/article-2035739/Mummering-comes-around/1
