Lunchbox Opening

Rejoice freaks and candy lovers. Legendary Halifax candy and novelty store Freak Lunch Box is on its way to St. John’s. 282 Water Street—formerly Island Designs and Gifts—has a fresh coat of tourquoise-teal-and-pink paint and owners Jeremy and Erin Smith are now accepting resumes.

This is the Smiths’ third serious attempt to launch Freak Lunch Box in St. John’s. “I visited once in 2002, and once in 2005,” says Jeremy, but the timing was never quite right. This time, though, they are here to stay. Having just launched a new store in Saint John, NB, Smith says, “we have some amazing managers and staff and I am able to grow the business.”

If you have been to any of the three other Freak locations, you’ll surely be excited. “The store will be similar to the Halifax store in product selection,” says Smith. “However, each store is unique in terms of the artwork, layout, and ‘local flavour’,” he adds.

And just what will that selection include? All sorts of strange and wonderful novelty goods, a full line of imported British and American chocolate bars you can’t get here—with weird names like Whatcamacallit, Curly Wurly, and Yorkie—plus 180 bins of bulk candy sold at a flat rate: “this always ends up being the most popular area of the store as you can mix and match and get as little or as much as you want,” says Smith, which will include gummy filled brains.

Mmmmmm… My cavities are tingling in anticipation.
