Every place I have travelled I have eaten at Mexican restaurants (my favorite type of food when dining-out!) and Zapata’s beats them all! Their chili is so rich and filling, I love that you get a dollop of chili (along with rice, corn and refried beans) with your entre. Mouth watering just thinking about it! Polo con chile verde = superb!
I don’t know why people would go to the chain Mexican restaurant when they could go here. Great food, great service, great for a party.
Food is overpriced, service slow. The waitress was nice though.
The Unknown Critic
Service was good…But food was dissapointment…Cold and everything tasted the same…Chilli over seasoned and very heavy…Margarita was very odd tasting and rim OVER salted…Very dissapointed due to many friends saying good things about the place(although they have not been there in a very long time)No refills on Ice Tea…Fajita(sp) meat exteamly tough and lacked that fresh feel and taste that fajita(sp)platters we have had before…Not busy on a saturday night says something
will not repeat
Zapata’s is by far the best, and most authentic, Mexican restaurant in the city. I had the ultimate pleasure of dining on properly prepared mexician cusine, and was even served by the owner herself! We were very lucky to be the only couple at the restaurant on a slow day in the middle of the week and were treated to superb service. I would have stayed all night, and I’m sure the owenrs would have let us! Anyone who disagrees is probably not accustomed to eating authentic Mexican food, but rather ill-prepared psuedo tacos from a fast food joint!
Service was slow……food not good at all. The fajitas were served with one sliver of both green and red pepper. That’s supposed to be enough to make 4 fajitas? Will not be returning. Bad overall experience.
I don’t quite understand the above reviews, based on our experience. The pollo con chili verde was delectable, and the fajitas I had were delicious, and there was so much steak, peppers, onion and chicken on the hot platter, I considered asking for another tortilla (they gave me three). The service was quick, the beer cold, and the waitress friendly. Highly recommended.
Worst Mexican food EVER. I don’t care if it is located on an island and some ingredients are hard to come by fresh, don’t make it then! Bad food is bad food people.
Worst of all it’s overpriced. I don’t recommend this place to anyone who likes Mexican food, you will be very disappointed.
Just because I live on an island on the far eastern coast of Canada does not mean I have to lower my standards of good food.
Dropped into Folly this evening (October 15th) and while the food was absolutely incredible, the service was slow and the waitress didn’t seem happy to be serving us. It seemed like she was over whelmed, although there were only two other tables. Definitely need a course in customer service.
As an appetizer we had Mexican springrolls that were so tasty down to the last bite!
I had the vegetarian cornmeal tortilla and my boyfriend had the beef chimichangas and my meal size was twice the size of his but both were really filling and tasty.
Really only deserves 2 and 1/2 stars… They need to start preparing meals fresh, rather than sticking pre-cooked meals under a heat lamp once you order them. The middle is always cold. Won’t go back until they step up their game.
Get six bucks, go to Sobey’s or Dominion, and get yourself an Amy’s enchilada meal in the frozen organic section. Far better (and less expensive) than anything you’ll order up at Zapata’s these days.
I just had the Mexican Combo Plater with beef and chicken enchiladas. This was a normal supper order. The total was $15 and change. I am very disappointed. The portion was ridiculously small for mexican food, we’re talking tiny here, looked like a child’s lunch portion. This dish was not well prepared, had no enchilada sauce, not one vegetable on the plate and tasted as though it had been seasoned with some cheap off the shelf packet of “Mexicanna” spice. They would have to pay me to eat this again. Need a zero star option.
I was disappointed with my experience there after hearing many good reviews from friends. My entree was good, but the Black Bean Soup was not even made with black beans (it was actually what seemed to be a can of bean medley that you can get for 90 cents at Sobey’s) and the beans were way undercooked.
Just called Groupon to get a refund on all Groupons I bought for there. Wouldn’t honor it even though was bought yesterday and printed. Had to pay full price for disgusting brown guacamole and half-rotten vegetables. And then said wasn’t good until tomorrow even though printed fine and nothing on it said that.
Groupon issued refund and advised that they did not do what they were supposed to and that they will be contacted. Never going to darken that door again. Food has really gone downhill.
Oh and did I mention a kid about 8 years old brought part of my meal to the table? Very professional.
The food is decent, and the portions are reasonable on the gut, but at $18 for a plate, combined with pretty subpar service, we’re not going back. The fact that there’s not a single Mexican there also makes me quite cynical of their ability to make authentic food.
Beware of a particular waitress who berates other staff, has no volume control, and just kills the atmosphere.
I also forgot to mention: they had no idea what to do with Groupons. Every one of us upstairs had one, and it was a complete headache. And we all had to listen to previously mentioned waitress fail at hospitality.
Was there last Friday night for a meal. For mexican food it was quite bland! The best part was the free nacho chips and salsa at teh beginning. My jalapeno poppers were not hot (the spicy or temperature kind) and my meal was over cooked & cold (platillo de zapatas or something). I had a really good lunch there a few months back but was really disappointed with the supper. my husband only got 3 wraps (tiny!) for his fajitas! We won’t be back again.
Also, the staff wasn’t the best either. one lady seemed nice but we had another one that seemed rude. We could hear her talking on the phone to customers who were trying to make reservations and she was almost yelling at them.
Also we had reservations for 5:30, and there was a lot fo tables empty. Tons of people came in and they said they were fulla t 6 so they coulnd’t get a table. We left around 6:30 and all those tables were still free! That doesn’t sound right?
Groupon have excellent customer Service BTW! When I first read your post i thought Groupon wouldn’t honor the refund! But Groupon are definately one of the best companies i’ve dealt with in a long time!
I had a similar experience – They wouldnt honour my groupon and the food was just gross anyways. Cant believe I paid full price for it.
It would be a lot nicer if Zapata’s
1. served salsa with fresh tomatoes in it
2. had stronger margaritas
3. didn’t make you fill your own leftovers container.
Tried it for the first time Saturday night past. Three of us went in after trying Wingin’ It and not being willing to wait an hour for a table.
Downstairs was full so they put us upstairs, which was nice. We got a booth, started with drinks and just ordered a platter of apps to share (something to munch on before a night out). The jalapeno poppers and mozza sticks were good, the chicken wings were decent, and the fries weren’t great but people generally don’t go to a Mexican restaurant for fries anyway.
I really liked the atmosphere. The music was good, the lighting nice and dim (I can’t stand brightly lit restaurants, makes me feel like I’m in McD’s), and our server (Justin, I think) was friendly and efficient. Our experience was pretty good overall, so I’ll definitely be back to try some of their actual Mexican food.
It sounds like you are mainly talking about the great service you had, but this place is not that authentic. My boyfriend and I go there because we love it for what it is, but it is a far cry from authentic mexican cuisine.
The service was great, the waiter upstairs was very attentive and friendly and if the review was based on service it would get five. The food is what knocks it down a star. The salsa that came with the chips was very odd tasting, almost a metallic quality to it, watery and far too acidic. Very off putting and based on it I wouldn’t order any of their nacho plates for fear it would have the same salsa. The enchiladas were okay, very filling and the churros were excellent.
This was a big disappointment. There is more flavour in Tostido’s salsa than in any of these dishes. They seem to be taking advantage of the fact that many people here have not had real Mexican food. Perhaps they haven’t either.
We have never been to a mexican resturant before and went to Zapata’s for the first time sunday evening. It was great! The place is cozy with nice decor, everytime you look around you find something new. Our waitress was friendly and overall it was a great experience. We were all happy with our food and would go back again.
I’m very displeased with this restaurant. My partner and I went for lunch and I sat down at 12pm. We didn’t get our “Lunch Express” meals until 12:48pm.
When we got our meals they were tasteless, bland, and borderline disgusting in the case of the refried beans.
In the end we ended up spending $27.27 for a lunch that was slow and left us hungry and unsatisfied. I’m very disappointed and will not be visiting again
The Scope is no more! Thanks for seven amazing years.
