  2. Ah,the much-maligned Velma’s.Victim of a public dressing down by local critic and faux-celebrity Karl”weatherguy”Wells…
As a fan of Wells column in the Telly(not so much his tv show)I’ll admit a small bit of trepidation when I entered this DT fixture, however I was pleasantly surprised.First the service, which was friendly and timely, though admittedly I was accompanied by a pregnant ex-employee and in spite of the fact it was around the hectic lunch hour on a sunny late fall day.The fare however was a little underwhelming,I had the fi-and-chi with dressing and gravy.Quality wise it was no better or worse than ,ummm, say, the big R,(take that as you will…for me that means “meh”)however the quantity was there,as well it should considering the rather high price.Ditto the nachos which were pricey and many. However unlike the fi/chi I didn’t think the nachos were up to even mediocre resto standards the veggies were raw and the cheese was of the supermarket variety and so were the nachos themselves.I usually don’t go to a restaurant to eat something I could make better at home falling over loaded. So there you have it,service good, food bad.the end.

  3. Here in St. John’s for school and been here a few times. The food here is amazing!! When I go, I either get the shrimp platter or burger platter. A MUST GO EVEN IF IN TOWN JUST FOR THE DAY/NIGHT!!!

  4. Great fish and chips.

For years, the first place I’d head for when arriving in St. John’s was Velma’s. And, it was for one purpose only……fish and chips ! Always great.

This trip I went in and had fish cakes.Great !

BUT….Friday morning (Aug.17) was a different story, as me, my wife, two daughters, and a son-in-law and two Granddaughters (16 month old twins) went for breakfast, and thought it would be the same great service, and the same great food ! Uh uh….did not happen. No fruit on the premises, which the small ones like for brekkie, no muffins, and initially, the waitress didn’t even know if they carried them or not; she had to go and ask ! Tell me, where can you go and not get fruit or muffins ? The waitress said all they have is deep fried or pan fried. That explains all the fat people waddling around St. John’s then.
