Monday to Wednesday is a buffett lunch at Taj with Curry Beef as the headliner. Thursday and Friday are Butter Chicken days.

Everything tastes great, from the freshly-made naan to the delicious homemade entrees. The Butter Chicken dish is creamy, mild, and thick. The naan is hot and soft, but crispy in the right places.
    The tandoori chicken is juicy.

We’ve had a number of other items from the menu, some as suggestions from the chefs, and everything has been great.

Taj Mahal, under its current chefs, does not disappoint.

    i love this restaurant.

whether i’m with a crowd of friends or just me and another, i always leave feeling full, happy, and looking forward to coming back.

their combination dinners (ie. for 2) are well worth it for variety and spice. (oh spice) and they have a fair amount of variety that each time you can have something different with something you know you like.

the buffett is pretty au regular but i prefer their’s to india gate. the meat is more marinated (not pre-cooked and mixed in) and their breads are always soft.

Was there for the lunch buffet, it didn’t do much for me. Food & surroundings were less than spectacular. There are better places to get a butter chicken in town…

The Taj used to be a decent place to eat, but the last few times I went there I had to leave. The menu’s were covered in food, plates dirty, and their was a obvious piece of food on my fork from the previous user.

To be honest I am not a picky person, I have eaten from holes in the wall in third world countries.

Go to the India Gate, better food.

The waitress was young and somewhat inexperienced, though nice enough and attentive as well. The food was quite good, although the shrimp was overcooked and chewy. The halibut was O.K. but didn’t seem extremely fresh. Music courtesy of OZ FM didn’t do much for the atmosphere, please consider another soundtrack. The sounds of the chef singing when we walked in were much more pleasant. The menus were indeed full of food, and some of the table clothes stained, although the silverware was clean and everything was color-coordinated (a nice touch). Prices are similar to India Gate. Overall it was a good experience, criticism is intended only to point out some minor flaws that management might want to consider.

I walked into the Taj Mahal because that was where friends had decided to go to that night. Upon entering, we were immediately seated and a crispy bread was brought out. Now, I am a vegan and always have an interesting time at restaurants when it comes to asking about the ingredients in certain dishes. The waiter was more than helpful and seemed well educated in their dishes. My boyfriend and I decided to split the Aloo Gobbi (cauliflower and potato with spices) and Chana Masala (chickpeas in spices). The food came on individual warmers and was more than enough food to feed the two of us. Though the Aloo Gobbi had a little too much cilantro, the cauliflower wasn’t over cooked and tasted delicious! It was the perfect side dish to the spicy chick peas!

The bill was around $20 which is very reasonably priced for how delicious the food was! I will definitely be returning to try other dishes.

Agree this place doesn’t do much for an Indian food lover – lacks that great flavour, poor customer service (sorry no relish) and awful ambience with pop music. Try one of the other Indians in town.

The service is always, for me top notch here. The cooks come out and greet me, and I always find myself seated in a very private romantic area, which works for my partner and I.
The food is always fantastic as well, and theres always a little something to take home afterwords. The servers are friendly, and are not intruding in the least. A great spot for a cozy romantic meal, in my opinion. Ill def be going back, maybe even this week. :)

Wonderful service at this average priced average quality Indian restaurant. The Taj won’t knock your socks off with its food and decor, but it’s a good place to get your reasonably priced Indian food fix every now and then.

Terrible experience…..to start we ordered the TAJ Appetizer…Which was supposed to have Onion Bhaji that came out as ONION RINGS!!! NO JOKE!!…Chicken Pakora came out as CHICKEN FINGERS WITH FISH BATTER (No Flavor)….the Butter Chicken tasted good but the 8 LITTLE CUBES for $18.00 was not worth it!!…The Candle Holder on the center of the table had dried up sauce on it….and we had our meal ate before we rec’d the Naan bread because they burnt the first batch. I can see why there were only two tables there at 7-8pm on a Friday night.

Wow! The Taj Mahal has finally renovated and redecorated! Hallelujah! Gone is that ugly and dirty green carpet. The new look is really fresh, clean and very elegant.

After a long time away, we tried the lunch buffet yesterday and were very pleasantly surprised. We found everything improved – most notably the mulligatawny soup and the tandoori chicken. The butter chicken was delicious, and they seem to be using less red food colouring now, which is great. Overall, the food was really, really good. We were pleased at how fresh all the food seemed, even though it was a slow Friday lunch, with only a few tables. Maybe because it is holiday week.

We are encouraged to go and give the supper menu a try. Hope it lives up to the new decor and improved lunch buffet!

Well…here’s a p.s. to my last review, above. We were back at the Taj last week and the place was…FILTHY! What a shame, after all the beautiful renovations they’ve just done. It looks like nothing has been washed, cleaned or wiped since the renos were done! I’m guessing before the renos, we just didn’t notice all the dirt??

Trust me – I’m no clean freak. I don’t mind a little healthy dirt. But this was beyond…the glass candle holder on our table was splatted with the now-dried food from several diners before us. It was so off-putting that I decided to swap it with one from another table – only to notice that they are all that way! All the new, lovely glass candle holders are filthy, covered with dried fool splatter. Almost kind of funny, but really more sad. Clearly, someone cared enough to renovate this place but not enough to train/invest in staff who care to keep the place up. The bathroom was really exceptionally dirty – can’t remember when I’ve last seen a resto bathroom so dirty. Again – beautiful new glass sink and vanity, and it’s totally covered in weeks of dirt and grime.

To top it off – we were the only diners there for lunch buffet and the waiter was sitting and reading a book behind the cash while we ate. Aaaaagh…it was all I could do to not ask him to get off his arse and give the table lamps a good freakin’ clean.

And the real clincher was that the buffet food was only so-so. It was nice that they sprinkled fresh cilantro on the dishes, but the food underneath was clearly at least a couple of days old. I know it’s hard to keep food fresh when you aren’t getting a good number of people in to the buffet – but added to the filth and dirt everywhere – I think this is the last time we’ll be visiting our old friend the Taj Mahal.

My advice to the owner of this restaurant – invest a little bit more $ and hire a fabulous, dynamic server who will take this place on and run it like his or her own spot! These people are out there, especially if you are willing to pay them a little bit above minimum wage. This investment would pay you off big time in the long run, and result in a clean, sparkling restaurant and customers who get service from someone who cares! That is just not happening now.

India Gate is a good option for lunch buffet and for yummy night-time Indian food – it’s off to Shalimar we go! Fresh, tasty, homemade food by people who really care.

On February 14th, I called in a takeout order early in the day to be ready for 5:30pm. Although someone answered the phone, they said that they ‘weren’t open’, but continued to take my order anyhow. I said that I wanted a ‘dinner for two’ with the following: papadums; 2 samosas; two naans; butter chicken; chicken curry; lamb curry; rice. They couldn’t give me the total on the order because they didn’t have a menu in front of them but said that they’d call back around 5:00 with the total. They did not call.

Given my experience ordering Indian food in other cities, I would have expected a dinner for two with alterations to be about $60. Imagine my surprise when I showed up at 5:30 and the bill was $120. Even then though, I figured maybe they didn’t do dinner for two portions and just gave me full orders of the items that I wanted. GREAT! LEFTOVERS! The amount of food turned out to be about the same or even less than what I used to get for $60 and there were no leftovers. Not only that, the food was cold and fairly tasteless. I feared this from a talk that I had with the waiter who said that the menu was ‘adapted to Newfoundland tastes’. Maybe they should have thrown some salt meat and cabbage in to improve it some more.

I’m only giving them two stars because the young guy serving us was so phenomenal. The food was at the buffet cold, barely there, limited quantities and didn’t have the normal indian cuisine favorites of mine. It was like they took frozen peas and carrots and threw it in sauce.

There were two soggy pieces of Naan bread at the buffett, and they didn’t even bother putting out a few of the menu items.

It should be mentioned we went there at 1pm, and the place was empty except for us… that alone should have said something.

Went to the Taj for the lunch buffet and it was honestly the worst meal, or lack there of, I have ever eaten. The entire place is covered in a film of dust and the food is obviously hours if not days old. The curry and chicken was flavorless, the rice was comparable to dried straw, and the soup was literally water. I pretty much sat around eating naan (pita) for 30 minutes so I wouldn’t leave completely starving.

    Never again.

Ate here this evening with 3 friends. Shared 2 orders of veg samosa and 2 veggie dishes with rice and the most delicious naan. Service was spectacular and the meal was fantastic. Had a beer each and left completely stuffed for $20 each. Great night!

I had dinner at the Taj Mahal tonight with two friends. We enjoyed excellent and informed service, and received spot-on beer recommendations. The chef accommodated a dairy-free request, which turned out deliciously. The naan was freshly made and both crispy and chewy, and the butter chicken was full of flavour. I plan to go back soon.

Stuffed to the gunnels… The naan bread! The naan bread was perfect! Service was top-notch, the dining area was clean & cozy, and with no reservation on a weeknight, my sister and I were seated within five minutes.

We started with the complimentary papadum with mango chutney and a spicy carrot chutney(?), and ordered a mixed appetizer basket that came with raita and a tamarind chutney(?). There were vegetable pakora, vegetable samosa, onion bhaji, and some other battered thing containing chicken that was quickly sent to my sister’s plate.

My only gripe would be the lack of heat (of the spice variety) in the vegetarian options. I chose the Navratan Curry(sp.?), which was a korma curry (creamy, mild). Filled with vegetables, cashews, and sweetness, this dish would be best complimented with a spicy, savoury dish, in my opinion. Nonetheless, for those with a sweet tooth, like myself, it was quite rich and delicious matched with naan bread, as well.

Reasonably priced for the quality of food, service and atmosphere provided. :) I would definitely go back!
