Sun Sushi rocks. Get the avocado rolls, or perhaps the deep-fried tofu rolls! yum.
I love Sun Sushi! While the service can be lacking sometimes, the food is always good. The unagi(eel) maki is amazing, as is the baked talapia roll and the golden casino roll. The pricing is reasonable and the menu selection is very big.
Sun Sushi needs to watch out, because they are a freight train from HELL! The inari rolls are spectacular, and the prices are totally reasonable. Good date spot.
I highly recommend the yaki chicken udon ($9.95). Every time I go there, I get it. I don’t recommend using chopsticks if you are new to them though. Just ask for a fork and then this becomes a lot easier to eat.
The thing I don’t like is that their bento box-like meals are only available during lunch hours. Plus there are only 4 choices in that lunch menu. I’d like to see an expanded choice of these and also it’d be nice to order one of these meals outside of lunch hours.
I was very turned off from Sun Sushi the first time I went there. The service was quite bad. They didn’t even have any green tea! I thought about suggesting they go buy a new kettle. I go to Asian Taste for all my sushi cravings.
My husband loves the BBQ eel roll, but I always get the cooked menu items…love the ton katsu chicken, orange chicken, rice bowls, vegetable tempura, and age gyoza. The food is always fresh and hot. The selection is amazing.
very yummy, very fast service
The food is yummy, but I have also had terrible, terrible service there before.
Some of the menu items are seasonal, which kinda stinks. Wish they carried more imported beers. The full menu is available on the website so you can pick what you want before you even arrive!
The sushi is good, the prices are O.k., the service is crappy. Get yourself a takeout order and enjoy.
tasty rolls but the price and size of the fish inside the rolls are awful. I am completely turned off paying for sushi that barely has a bite of tuna in their “spicy tuna” rolls. they charge too much for the amount of fish you actually get. more rice than anything else.
still, their recipes are interesting and flavorful…just wish they’d drop the prices… it’s a ripoff.
I’ve been to Sun Sushi twice. Love the food, but the service I received BOTH times (was most recently there this past June) was horrible.
Service a little slow at times – but certainly better than most digs in St. John’s
Why oh why would they assume you like fish eggs in your california roll…
Twice now I’ve ordered some kind of sushi roll, and it came with fish eggs in it, when they were clearly not listed along with every other thing that the roll contained.
and you can’t pick them out, they stick to everything :(
So I had to make a point of asking everytime I order, “Is there fish eggs? Because I don’t want fish eggs…” which makes them sneer at me :(
dam their sushi for being so tasty… I keep going back!
The food here is sooo good, and the prices are pretty decent. You can have a feed for under 20.00. The service is a little vague, but once your order is in, it doesn’t take long to get your food. Definitely on my list of favourites.
Best sushi on the rock. In fact, in its class Sun Sushi would probably rank up there as some of the best sushi in Canada. Well maybe. In any case there is nothing quite like ordering their party pack for take-out and eating it all by yourself without utensils.
I actually agree with that. The quality of Sun Sushi compares favourably to any Sushi place I’ve tried off the island. Admittedly I’ve only been to a few sushi places off the island, but it’s better then all the fancy Toronto sushi joints I’ve been in. Sun Sushi hasn’t disappointed me yet.
I have to say out of the Sushi places I’ve visited Sun Sushi is my favorite. The tea and soup are complimentary with the sushi rolls you order (I think). Someone commented that there is no green tea, however the Genmaicha tea they serve is a combination of green tea and brown rice and is delicious! I have heard that Asian Tastes is good though, so they may have some competition there.
Love Sun Sushi but am currently completely disappointed with their lack of regard for their customers. They have been inexplicably closed for about a month and a half now, not only this but I was told the would be open on the 8th which i found out today has been changed to the 15th. Due to this i am seriously considering not going back there at al even though it is great food.
I was skeptical way back when Sun Shushi opened – having lived in Japan for several years i considered myself something of a sushi aficionado!
But I was very impressed with the quality of the sushi and other menu items and now I’m a regular regular. Love it!
I find service to be quick and adequate for this kind of casual setting.
I honestly ADORE Sun Sushi. The Baked Tilapia Roll! Oh, and for dessert, don’t forget to ask for the Banana Tempura! It’s not on the menu, but it’s delicious. Last time I had it they were out of vanilla icecream and we tried it with ginger icecream instead. It was an interesting experience!
I will admit the service is lacking more often than not..
Almost didn’t get our Miso Soup once. It was disappointing.
But that doesn’t stop me from going! The Sushi is still delicious!
While I generally enjoy Sun sushi’s food, and atmosphere, every time I go there, something goes wrong on our order. Something is forgotten, or mixed up, or left in. Every time I ask about having s little bit of seaweed salad instead of a house salad, I get a different answer.
PLEASE inform your employees on how everything works, and clean their ears for me. I’m sick of repeating my order three times and still getting the wrong thing, at the wrong time.
I’m a huge fan of Sun Sushi, though I agree with everyone else – their service is the worst! I think their prices are really reasonable, their food is always good, the tables are clean (I’d probably avoid the washrooms if possible). I have never gotten take-out there before but I should probably consider it! It would be a great way to avoid the bad service!
The spicy tuna roll is my personal favourite!
I have deviated and tried the sweet potato tempura, the california roll and the rice bowl. All of which were appetizing but I continue to return for the spicy tuna!
Service is not commendable. Welcoming atmosphere not people.
The taste and quality of the food has always been great. Their prices are really good too. The service is about a 0 out of 5. It’s been tolerable because the food is always good, but our most recent visit will be our last. They gave my wife the wrong order, and insisted that she pay for it because no one else is going to eat it. This makes me think, “Have they re-plated food before?”
We will never step foot in the place again.
I have sampled sushi around the world and have to say that the stuff served at Sun Sushi is a total disappointment. I am new to St. John’s and was looking for a place to get my regular dose of sushi. I gave Sun Sushi two tries and was disappointed both times. Tasteless and uninteresting and I confess I felt a bit off after both meals.
I totally agree. The worst sushi I have EVER been served. I am shocked to read how many people rave about this place. Perhaps they never get off the island, poor things.
I’ve loved this place since it opened but their service is 50/50 siding from alright to terrible. Being that there are 3 choices in the city for sushi, you’re stuck if you decide to stop going to 1 of these restaurants.
My last time at SS was terrible. 60 minutes from order to my friends being served. 15 minutes after they finished eating I was served my order. This is completely unacceptable. The staff apologized when they served me but really come on that is a ridiculous wait time.
An hour and a half to be served should not be happening.
I have had sushi in many places including Hawaii and NYC and I have to say, for the price, Sun Sushi is not bad. Granted, the service is not always stellar, but many of the staff are not very fluent with english, so you have to get them to read back your order. My husband and I eat there regularly and have never experienced any illness that we can attribute to bad food from there. We are made to feel welcome and valued as customers every time we visit,
Awful, awful service.
I used to go here all of the time. Pretty much EVERY time I had bad service, but I continued to go because I liked the food.
Then, the last time we went there we didn’t get our tea or our soup (while everyone else around us did). We waited a FULL HOUR after we ordered with no sign of our food (and the people right next to us came in, got their soup and tea, ordered, ate and left while we were WAITING).
Eventually we got fed up and went to talk to the person at the cash – their response was “Uhhh, well it looks like your food is about done now. Do you still want it?”. We left and never looked back.
Now we go to Asian taste and we are very happy. The service is a million times better, you still get complimentary soup and tea, the prices and food are comparable and you aren’t left feeling completely neglected.
Best sushi on the rock. I cant even count how many times I’ve been there and I’ve never been disappointed by the food. Loves the spicy salmon and sushi pizza. Absolutely delicious!
The only thing though is the terrible service. I mean the service was speedy and all that but the servers seem to be cranky almost every single time I’m there. I have never been asked for once how my food was. The servers just don’t seem to care at all.
Great food. Service is a little slow sometimes. But I keep going back because the food is so good.
Tasty, albeit over-priced sushi with robot-like waiters.I go there every 3 months or so for a sushi fix.Nothing too spectacular. You will spend 50 bucks per couple and go to burger king and spend 8 bucks an hour later as you will still be hungry.
The most incompetent service I’ve ever received, anywhere. It took 40 minutes to get menus, one member of the party was served in 15 minutes while the other 5 watched him eat. We got another person’s order 45 minutes later. A full 2 hours before we finally got “all” of our meals ( I say “all” because our order was never fully correct). 3 times they tried to bring us someone else’s order or else asked what we had ordered. The servers walked right by our table with no eye contact, no explanation or apology for the delay, not even to top up our water. We were even ignored when we lined up to pay. We threw what pocket change we had on the table and walked out. The food was fine, but not worth the hassle.
Went to Sun Sushi today for the first time in years.
I had a place to be, so we came in at five and asked the waiter if it was possible to get fed and leave before 7:30. He said sure, no problem, so we sat down, ordered, met our friends, a good time was had.
Except for one thing.
My food (a Katsu Curry Bowl) did not arrive until about 7:15. I was forced to scarf it down and run- as such, I can’t say much as to the quality of the food. When I left, one of our friends had still not gotten served. Meanwhile, a few others had received their food about an hour ago, had eaten it, and were hungry again.
While we waited for our food, the waiter did not even come by to ask if we wanted our drinks refilled. We got up and asked several times for our meals- which we felt awful about, as we knew whatever had happened wasn’t his fault.
Still, what I tasted was nice- maybe on a less busy time it would be okay. But such inconsiderate actions have turned me off the place entirely.
My girlfriend and I popped in today looking for a quick bite before the supper rush (about 4pm) — just a salad and a roll each. The salad dressing was watered down, the tea was cold, the sweet potatoes weren’t fully cooked, and the service was horrible. It took way too long for food to arrive, with too much time between dishes. I remember when this place used to be good, but me and GF have now put it on our “BANNED!” list. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
I took off a star per complaint:
1: They sometimes have slow sevice
2: It seems like every time I go to eat there, they are closed for no apparent reason for several days at a time.
Otherwise the food is great!
I ADORE this place! Yes, the service can be a bit lacking (I’ve received wrong orders a couple times, but I was given the right one and on one occasion, a free appetizer!) but given many of the staff don’t speak fluent English, it’s fine. I find if I point to the menu or say the item number, it seems to give better communication. The rush tune can be a bit of a pai. If you’re waiting to pay, but usually I’ll stay seated with my company until the line tapers off. I’ve never had to wait more then 20 minutes to be served, and the food usually comes in 10-15 minutes later. The atomsphere is a little cheesy but cute, and I find everything very clean and sanitary!
I’ve gone there once for supper this week, and I fully intend to go back again soon! :)
Could it kill them to smile and not scowl at the customers.
Awesome! Owner is very nice man.
Have patience with the service. If you want fast, go elsewhere.
Food is fresh and well priced.
I ordered sushi pizza for an appetizer last night based on this recommendation. AWESOME is right! Panko crusted fried sticky rice as a base, white/garlic sauce spred, salmon sashimi topper with green onion and tobiko (roe) sprinkled on – YUM! I\’ll be ordering it again for sure. Thanks Ben! Oh, and I\’ve had slow service here a couple of times since they\’ve been opened but usually the food arrives in a reasonable amount of time. Yesterday if anything the service was too fast – everything arrived at the same time and only a couple of minutes after we received our drinks. I hardly had enough time to take a sip of my beer before tucking into the food!
While the sushi is very good and the prices are reasonable some of the servers difficulty with English really holds back the experience. Having to point out to the server the item I wanted on the menu was awkward and a little embarrassing. Also the tables are too close together. Without eavesdropping I could vary plainly hear the conversation at the next table.
Good spot to eat alone (especially the Spicy Scallop Roll! Amazing.) Wouldn’t recommend it for a date or social eating.
I love the food at sun sushi. However, they seem to mix up my order a lot. Not to mention the service is horrible. I’ve never been served my more boring, lifeless individuals as the servers are there. I’ll continue to go there, just because it’s quick and cheap. But as for going out for a nice sushi meal, i’ll take Basho and their amazing service any day, and the sushi isn’t even comparible. It makes Sun Sushi look like a run-down mcdonalds.
Wonderful evening, simple atmosphere, very fast service. Great food!
Maybe one thing to check into: The room was quite cold and drafty, not very pleasurable for a longer meal.
Can’t say I’ve actually eaten there, but I saw the sign claiming “sushi and bubble tea” and was so excited. I love bubble tea, and previously thought that there was no place in town to get it. I went inside, straight to the bar hoping to order one, when the server who obviously didn’t speak a great deal of english asked if I wanted a table. I said no, that I just wanted to order some bubble tea. She said that they didn’t have any, as if it was the most obvious fact on the planet, offering no explanation as to why they have a freakin sign up for it, and walked away! What the hell? Don’t advertise in big bold letters outside your store that you have something if you actually don’t.
Their sushi has gotten smaller. This was the case about a month ago, but then decided to give it another chance. No, it’s not very good value.
Also wish the tuna didn’t have to be partially cooked first, or that there where more rolls using fresh fish. I’m pretty squeamish about Atlantic salmon and try to avoid it, but there aren’t many raw other fishy options. Yes, there is the nigiri menu–but it’s about 5-6 bucks+tax for two teensy tiny pieces.
All said, the spicy broccoli rolls were great.
Amazing food! Salmon scallop roll is to die for! We will go again when we visit St Johns in the future. Good job guys and gals!!
I’m literally blown away there are ANY negative reviews!
I LOVE this spot! The quality of the produce is fantastic!
Service may not be 10/10 .. but I don’t go there for service, I go for their deadly sashimi :D I hit this spot every time I visit newf without fail.
Just paid $21.00 (tax in) for a teeny tiny spicy tuna roll (6.99) and the delicious (but still overpriced at 12.99) palm spring roll. Might I suggest a more reasonable $4.99 for those teeny tiny spicy tuna rolls, and $8.99 for the palm spring? Seriously – I’m still quite hungry. We pay wayyy too much for things like this here in St. John’s. Although come to think of it I could have stuffed my face with pretty good sushi at City Light all night for $20.00…
Three generous stars for a restaurant which offers pretty decent sushi for mediocre prices, and could stand to clean the bathrooms every now and then too.
I’m very surprised by all of the negative reviews on here. My boyfriend and I have been there 7-8 times in the past year and it’s always been great. The service has always been fast, and the sushi is always amazing. I have to admit that the servers often seem distracted and are not always super friendly when it’s busy, but I’m fine with that as long as I get my food promptly.
They’ve never messed up my order, and I’ve always gotten my food in under 20 minutes, even when I was there with a larger group. My boyfriend and I went there this evening and we got our 4 special rolls and vegetable tempura delivered in about 8 minutes, it wasn’t terribly busy but that’s still pretty impressive.
We always order from the “special roll” section of the menu. The rolls are all around 10 dollars but they are much larger and better than some of the 6-7 dollar rolls. My favorites are the Tuna Tempura roll, the Soft-shell Crab Roll and the Red Dragon Roll. The Tuna Tempura Roll is amazing! It’s fried in tempura batter so it’s not the healthiest option but I always have to get one.
I have traveled and I’ve eaten plenty of sushi, so please don’t assume that I think it’s good just because I’ve never left the island. Of course I wish it were a little cheaper, but from a business point of view they don’t have much competition so they can afford it.
Please go try it for yourself! Don’t let the bad reviews turn you away.
FIrst time going to a sushi restaurant in NL!!! I was so excited. I’ve been to MANY sushi restaurants throughout Canada so my expectations were high. It was a busy Saturday afternoon so I expected to have slow service. I was seated immediately and was served a bowl of hot miso soup very shortly thereafter. I did have to wait to have my order taken but I expected that. Once I placed my order I was surprised at how small the portions were. I started with goyza-delishious!! I ordered an assorted sushi plater-it was good but just basic; salmon, “white” fish, shrimp and california rolls. REALLY small/thin portions of sushi/rice. I also ordered a salmon hand cone-which was beautiful!! Service was slow-I had to flag down my server to get a second cup of tea!! I stopped by the sushi prep area to say thank you to the person who made the meal to say thank you and he laughed at me!! No sure if there was a language barrier or if he was embarrassed of what was sent out. Good but not the best….
I really wish this place would listen to reviews (not just this site) and work on the customer service. I love this place to eat, it is one of my favorite spots, i do not think i have had a bad item from the menu. The service is brutal. we just ordered a take out and they put all the rolls in teh same package (not a fan of that), also last time eating in, the service was lacking. With 2 new sushi restaurants in St John’s now, the quality of their food isnt going to keep customers, as the other places are also slightly cheaper!!!
The Scope is no more! Thanks for seven amazing years.
