I was very excited to try out Sugar Mama’s, but was unfortunately very disappointed. Five friends and I all went there on a Saturday around noon and all had something different. I tried the chocolate cupcake with coconut frosting and it had zero flavour and was dry as a bone. I thankfully only got the smaller one but didn’t even eat it all. None of my friends enjoyed their either and a good portion of cupcake went into the garbage. I won’t be back.

I discovered this little gem quite by surprise. This little bakery is nestled into a strip mall in Mount Pearl. The decor is a cheery vintage turquoise with vintage poster signs and 50’s style seating. The service is super friendly and knowledgeable. I have been there about a half dozen times and the Say Cheese Cupcake is my absolute favourite. It is a chocolate base, cream cheese filling, chocolate chips and a generous swoosh of creamy cheese icing on top. Every bite is moist and delicious. I also love the S’More Please; chocolate base with a marshmallow filling, topped with chocolate ganache and garnished with a chocolate drizzled graham cracker.
My daughter loves Give me M’Oreo. Its a chocolate cupcake with Oreos blended in the buttercream icing.

Although most options are buttery delicious and sinful, they do sugar free and gluten free ones.

    Check out the choices

I am a fan and keep looking for excuses to pop out to Mount Pearl :-)

I have to agree with poster Ruth! The exact same experience for me. I bought half a dozen for me and my family, all different kinds, and none of us liked them. No flavour, too dry. The only thing they had going for them is that they looked great. But, obviously, that’s not enough.

  4. Anna · April 27, 2012

You Suck! Sugar Mama’s is heavenly!

  5. Cookie Monster · April 27, 2012

Maureen and Ruth, you both obviously seem like you are the “competition” or related to such in the local baking industry! I have also been to Sugar Mamas numerous times and am yet able to find any of the products “tasteless and dry”. I have always thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of the cupcakes that they serve and from the line-ups that I see there on my visits so does everyone else! Your loss for sure!! Enjoy your preservative based garbage instead!!

  6. Sam · April 27, 2012

I went to Sugar Mama’s on a cupcake craving. The atmosphere is adorable, 50’s diner type. As far as the cupcakes go, they’re reasonably priced and they look adorable. I did notice as some of the other commentors did that the cupcakes were dry. This is not competition speaking, I’m an at-home baker and I like a good cupcake. The icing was thick, too much so for my liking but with a good consistency and flavor. I tried a few varieties of the mini cupcakes, and while the sales-girl did seem confused when I didn’t name the cupcakes by their store name, she was very nice.

I probably wouldn’t go back again, as I think my own baked goods are better, but that’s just my opinion.

  7. Sarah · April 27, 2012

I have had Sugar Mama’s cupcakes three separate times. Each time they were brought to a party or a get-together. My friends and I tried a little bit of each cupcake and they were bland and very dry – as I have noticed other reviewers have pointed out. It is almost as if they are missing something… However, they do look good. Absolutely no flavour! For a place that deals specifically in one item, I think it is sub par at best.

  8. AAR · April 27, 2012

I was also disappointed, I went there once, my bf and I bought 6 different flavours to try. The cake was dry and flavorless, and I couldn’t finish a full cupcake. The icing is delicious, but the cupcake was bland, more like a dry muffin. I was hoping this place would succeed (I love cupcakes!!), so hopefully they take the reviews and change rhe recipe, as the product is not consistent with what a professional bakery which specializes in cupcakes should be. I’ve had better at home, and at the grocery store.

  9. Cupcake Lover · April 27, 2012

We’ve tried these cupcakes on three separate occasions. We found the cupcakes to be dry, and there was too much sweet icing. I’ve been to Magnolia Bakery in NY and Georgetown Cupcakes in DC and these just don’t compare. I won’t be going back….

  10. DPomeroy · April 27, 2012

Was not impressed. For 4 dollars a cupcake they should be amazing. I have tried them twice now. 12 different flavours and can honestly say there is nothing special about them. The vanilla cupcakes are heavy and kind of dry. Chocolate is definitely moister but the icing on most was way to sweet and too much for the size of the cupcake. Also they should be more careful when filling the pans. A few cupcakes were visibly smaller then others. Barely went past half the wrapper. For 4 bucks a pop they should be the same size at least. Shame on you for charging ridiculous prices for a very mediocre product. There are people selling them out of there home for much cheaper and better quality.

  11. DPomeroy · April 27, 2012

Those people in the line ups were probably all first time buyers lol. You clearly don’t know what a good cupcake is. You OBVIOUSLY MUST WORK FOR SUGAR MAMAS OR KNOW SOMEONE INVOLVED WITH IT! See how stupid it sounds when you assume things. We are all entitled to our own opinion there is no reason to be so rude like its personal. If your so concerned about eating garbage maybe you should lay off the cupcakes and learn how to be polite to people.

  12. Lo · April 27, 2012

I have been to Sugar Mama’s a few times, but I find the only way to get a good quality cupcake is to go in the morning or at least before dinnertime. Every time I picked one up in the evening they seem to have gone dry. However, getting a few fresh out of the oven was a much more pleasant experience!

  13. LOL · April 27, 2012

then why don’t you open a bakery if they are better :)

  14. LOL · April 27, 2012

I think Sugar Mamas is AMAZING. Yes they sell out early on occasion, but atleast that means they sell FRESH product every day where other people just constantly bake and sell again the next day and so on. I’ve been there multiple times and drive all the way from foxtrap because they are worth it! you are all crazy to say the oposite, or competetors! Also in compairison to coco’s, which only have two flavored caked with all different icings, sugar mamas does so many cool and intriguing flavors and are always coming up with new ones. I too have been to all those famous places and in my opinion sugar mamas is up to par! so happy to have something so cool in newfoundland. good job! keep it up!
    sincerely, happy customer !

  15. anna · April 27, 2012

Sugar Mama’s cupcakes are $2.00 each, I think you may have the $4 cupcakes confused with another bakery. Such a shame to be so negative but I guess that’s what you do with your time, to each his/her own…

  16. Gina · April 27, 2012

Gave Sugar Mama’s a try with high hopes, but was very disappointed. They are great-looking but the cake is average, and the heavier buttercreams have an unpleasant, overly sweet flavouring. The cream cheese frosting was better, but I still won’t be back.

  17. Megan664 · April 27, 2012

Terrible! Very stale and disapointing. Also, ordered a number of cupcakes for a corporate event and our order was completely wrong. After speaking with the manager I receivied no satisfaction… very unprofessional.

  18. rrtx · April 27, 2012

enjoyed the decor, cupcakes are wonderful. Hardest part was deciding which one to get ! So nice to have fresh without all preservatives daily …
beats grocery store type anyday, if you read the ingedients on packaged ones enough to scare you …

  19. DD · April 27, 2012

Ok, Sugar Mama’s. Stop trying to monopolize this feed as well as Coco Cupcake’s. It’s pretty obvious how much padding is happening. I haven’t tried Coco cupcakes, but I have given Sugar Mama’s more than one shot and the icing is way to sweet, neither the icing or the cake has enough flavor, and the cake is always, always dry. The end.

  20. Chris · April 27, 2012

I’ve been there a couple of times and liked it.

  21. East End Boy · April 27, 2012

Tried for the first time yesterday. Got 6 cupcakes (2 each of 3 varieties) for $10 to enjoy with friends. Tasty fresh cupcakes and nicely decorated; 1 variety I found a but too sweet for my taste, but the others were enjoyable. Great packaging also… I have only 2 suggestions/constructive critisms both regarding the store itself: 1. Having lots displayed in a small space (counters, walls etc) can seem very cluttered, and this came across a little bit yesterday. 2. It might be helpful to have your baked goods labelled, to prevent customers from having to ask, “What are these?” repeatedly.
    Hope to return again soon!

  22. Janice · April 27, 2012

Hmmm, not that great cute presentation but thats it… they were dry and flavourless like the other said. Not worth the money after finding out they use great value products! I can make my own (better) cupcakes..

  23. Michelle · April 27, 2012

Delicious! I was given a box of the mini cupcakes as a Christmas gift. They were fabulous! It’s the first time I had them, and definitely won’t be the last-mmmmmm! Loved the cake texture, and the icing was a delicate vanilla flavour that was just perfect.

  24. Lesleigh · April 27, 2012

I found the cupcake I bought today to be very dry. Also, I think 6 cupcakes for 14$ is a bit much. I love the variety and that they do make gluten free cupcakes but honestly, the ones I had were dry and I can’t say this will be a top pick the next time I want something sweet.

  25. Fred · April 27, 2012

I have been in service industry, mainly food for 23 years mostly in Toronto.I’m a trained baker.Never been to Sugar Momma’s Bakery but looking forward to it.In the mean time its very typical in Newfoundland to tear down when someone is trying to succeed and those people who are tearing haven’t a clue what they are taking about.Hey people suggest changes and pat Sugar Momma’s on the back and stop the tearing down.
I’m looking forward to my opening soon and having you (the customer) giving constructive reviews only.ENJOY.STARS are for your great effort.

Before I start I need to say that, since moving here, I try to eat exclusively from local restaurants, pubs, soup deliveries etc and love to recommend great food great service and am happy to see young business make it if the deserve it & I use my real name and don’t anonymously post!

I tried a few of these cupcakes today, I had been craving a gourmet cupcake for a few months..and i must say they are terrible cupcakes! They were dry and for the most part flavorless , one tasted exactly like “tinned milk”, looked good but that’s where it stopped!

I posted a remark, on their FB page as the feedback section of their actual web page is postings at the owner/web masters discretion and all positive, to the effect as listed above, comparing them to a 3 day old cupcake from a major grocery store and said “Epic Fail”. Within minutes the owner tried to add me and a minute later a relative, most likely the owners husband based on hyphenated last names sent me the following message (I’ll remove the expletives ) “Hey f$&¥ nuts, you got a problem with the store that bad let me know personally, don’t be an a$$$%#le and post s#!t here like a coward. This is a business and if you don’t like it that’s your problem.”

What he doesn’t realize is that as a Buisness Owner dissatisfied customers is his problem! I would avoid this spot, save your money! But if you do go and are dissatisfied just smile and walk out, you don’t want to be threatened with physical harm with is how unhappy customers seem to be treated! I’m concerned about next week when the owners husband gets back fro off-shore!

Bought 12 cupcakes for my Mom’s birthday and brought them to her office – soooo beautiful and delicious! I had 12 different kinds and they were all a hit! I had heard mixed reviews, but I was definitely not disapointed! Great presentation, very nice staff and fair prices! Also a very cute atmosphere – lovely for a dessert date!!

  28. LA · April 27, 2012

I have tried several and on different occasions. Say Cheese is always delicious and Tres Leche is excellent if you can catch it on the rotating menu. I have never had the dry tasteless experience that people mention here. They often sell out in the late afternoon so the likelihood of a 3 day stale is very unlikely.

I find the service could be a little better. When I asked a question about the schedule of a specialty cupcake, I was told you just have to try your luck. The baker mixes it up and you never know what might be out.

  29. Dee · April 27, 2012

I have had these cupcakes on three separate occasions, and I call tell you that each and every time they were dry… just AWFUL. Save your money and buy a box of Duncan Hines.

  30. Michelle · April 27, 2012

I have cupcakes (minis) from here on a regular basis, and they are TO DIE for. I can’t stop thinking about them, they are that good. They have never been dry, as some have alleged. ‘The Pearl’ cupcake is absolutely delicious, as is everything that I have ever eaten there- you just can’t go wrong. Can’t wait to try out the new milkshakes! The staff are very friendly and helpful and always seem to know their stuff. Love the cupcakes, and long live Sugar Mamas!

  31. Haily · April 27, 2012

I’ve tried Sugar Mama’s a few times now and I always find that the cupcakes are very heavy and dry with little to no flavour. They look cute but considering it costs $14 for half a dozen cupcakes its definitely not worth it.
