I have never really eaten at quintanas, but I’ve eaten upstairs on many an occasion. I believe upstairs is the lounge, cocktail, tapas section of quintanas and they call it arriba’s. I don’t know if they still call it that. Anyways, upstairs is home of the BEST DEAL for food in the city, as far as I know. on thursdays from roughly 5-8, and on fridays from roughly 4-8, they have free nacho bar with purchase of a drink. i believe soft drinks on tap are 3.50, domestic bottle of beer are 4.50, and imports are 5.50. however, you can get a full pint of delicious quidi vidi beer(i think they have honey brown and QV light on tap) for only $4! They also have a wide selection of delicious cocktails. they give you a paper nacho plate/bowl thing, a square thing like you get when you get low-fare nachos from the cinema or whathaveyou. quintanas owns casa grande, so they have delicious casa grande chips in a big pop-corn heater thing, and then they usually have at least 3 types of salsa. lettuce, tomato, sour cream, onion, mexican rice, spiced chilli beef, refried beans, nacho cheese sauce on pump…it changes up from time to time. I’ve been in there before and they’ve had steamed mussels, and I’ve seen some sort of fish there too. the atmosphere is excellent, with some nice little leather couch nooks to chow down on your nachos with your buddies.
A pint of beer and a plate of top-notch nachos for the low-price of $4. the staff is excellent, the atmosphere is cozy, what more could you ask for? Best deal in town. I used to go there after class with friends all the time when I was in mun.
Was empty on a Friday night. As the closest restaurant to MUN, this speaks volumes…
Never had a bad experience. I visit lunch hours, they are quick and the food is delicious. Very clean and very friendly staff what more can you ask for in a restaurant. pricing isn’t so bad either.
Lunch is a fantastic value Tex tons are great repeat orders in one visit
salsa is great
as this is a review sometime service is spotty ie drinks not refilled…running out of items…and chips sometimes stale
but overall good will return and have returned
Was there Monday night had the appy platter good but I wish more home made appies as the selection rather that onion rings and store bought mozza sticks…taco salad can be over dressed (ask for dressing side or light dressing) and you will not be dissapointed I got the the taco and enchilada(sp) combo platter with rice and veg it came hot fresh and tasted excellet very happy..dessert was fried bananas with ice cream excellent..Also at the start you get chips and salsa great to get you started!service was fast and friendly and very helpful…also lunch is a great value as well…Best mexican restaurant in town…
The service was average, but the food was excellent, I had a beef & bean burrito with a side of fries. A little bit pricey, but worth it. I definitely need to go back again.
Horrible, horrible, horrible! Had reservations but had to wait 20 minutes to be seated, waited an hour for our apps, and another 1/2 hour for our mains. Service was mediocre. Food was dried out and cool, obviously sitting under a heat lamp for at least half an hour. Not fresh or spicy. Didn’t even taste close to authentic mexican not to mention almost $20 a plate. For beans and tortillas! Ridiculous! Save your money and go to Mexico instead.
Friendly staff, food is okay, somewhat overpriced… the building is in desperate need of a makeover.
Quintana’s is comfort food to the core. Its reasonably priced and the food tastes great! My favourite meal is the lunch menu– Grande Poquitos with rice and beans and of course the famous Queso to dip. GD its good! The place gets slammed on the weekends..you can’t get a table unless you have a reservation. I believe they have been in business for over 25 years so I think that says way more than anything I could write here. And the nacho bar.. the only one in the city. Come on folks, it doesn’t get much better than that.
LOVE LOVE LOVE and miss this place a lot. I wish they would open a spot up in Halifax!!
I have eaten at this restaurant many many times as there are very few mexican restaurants in St. John’s. The service is never very good but I kept going because it was the only choice. I recently reached my limit with them and will never go again! The power was out at their restaurant one evening and they were closed. They didn’t bother to call and let their customers with reservations know that they wouldn’t be open for service. When I called to speak with the manager she was unbelievably rude and ignorant. Don’t go there!
Great food!! Best Mexican food in the city BY FAR! The service is always wonderful and they really go out of their way to accommodate you. One of my favorites!!!
Gross!!! Mexican’s don’t use Velvetta!! No – never – does this woman even know what real Mexican food tastes like? Has she ever visited a Mexican kitchen?
Every couple of years I try going back to this place and give it another shot. I love mexican food – and I really would like to be able to eat here. But GROSS!!!
Went for supper last night, first visit in a long time. It was, in a word, disgusting. The poquitos as appetizer were okay, but that was not a sign of things to come. The rest, Mexican flag, salad and soup was beyond greasy and the taste was nothing short of hideous. Really, I’m a relentless omnivore, not a food critic, but this was tough to take. Maybe they spend all their time making chips and salsa for sale in the grocery stores, but they are not taking time to make good food. Frankly, I will never go back. The one star goes to the very good waitress who was pleasant and helpful.
For such a tired looking restaurant it has potential. We were there on Friday night for the taco bar…..or should I say the catfood and cheese wiz tasting station. You know a restaurant is in trouble when they are always advertizing for new staff. The food was nor OK and the atmosphere reminded me of detention center were all the staff seemed to be afraid of the boss lady. The place has potential if it were under new management.
I actually don’t mind Quintanas, but you’re right, it isn’t good Mexican food. In fact there isn’t really anywhere in St. John’s to get proper Mexican. Our “Mexican” restaurants are basically just bars that serve greasy nachos and tacos, with maybe a few sombreros hanging on the wall. Quintanas can be a nice place to for a few beers and a feed, but it isn’t what I would call a good Mexican restaurant. If that’s what you’re looking for you’re better off buying the ingredients and cooking at home.
i love your review it is so true
you are 100% right.
i just peed a little when i read this
was this not the hurricane ignor day ? im almost positive that the city was put into a state of emergency. Interesting that you had quintanas on the mind…..
horrible service, waitress (who appeared to be the owner) gave a whole lot of attitude, and slow service, in which she tried compensating for later by being overly nice after our food was served. luckily, the food was actually pretty good.
If you are a fan of Mexican food, do not eat here. Bland salsa, tasteless guac. and it just goes downhill from there. We are living in a city that is too far from the Mexican border to get any kind of decent Mexican food.
I have to agree with a lot of the comments on here: there are NO real authentic tasting mexican places in this city and it’s high time we get a good one! I’m sorry but sidekick mexican rice and old el paso beans in a can just don’t cut it.
This place is only good if you’re going to get make your own nachos and beer on the latter end of a weeknight. Even then the nachos are just a free afterthought to the beer..
You are right. The staff are afraid of the boss “lady”. She is abusive and mean.
Adam, you got the owner pegged. Very mercurial moods.
The Mexican Flag is my favorite meal of all time, like “last meal if I were on death row” good.
NEVER EVER GO HERE. Worst restaurant experience I've ever had by far! I was really craving Mexican food and being new around here my professor suggested I go here. I was pumped! Ready for amazing Mexican food. I was thoroughly disappointed with this place :( My boyfriend and I went on a friday night. To our surprise it was not busy. We went upstairs and sat ourselves. We had to ask for menus from our server when she came 10 minutes later. When we questioned our server about items on the menu, she came out and said she did not know. For a server to not know basic things about the menu from her own restaurant is horrible! She didn't even say that she would ask around, she just said she didn't know and kept it at that. She wasn't very friendly either.
While we waited for our food, there was a disruptive drunk guy by us talking loudly and ordering drinks. They just kept giving drinks to him….they should learn when to cut people off! We got our food and drinks (chicken burrito, beef burrito, and a pitcher of strawberry margaritas). The margaritas were decent, but the burritos tasted like rubber. But we forced them down because our bill was going to be close to 100 dollars. We didn't want to waste money!
To end this amazing experience (major sarcasm), we got our bill. They overcharged us on the margaritas…it clearly said the price on the menu. When I pointed this out to the server, she went and asked her boss. Her boss said that she wouldn't change it and that we should have been charged an extra 5 more dollars because we got flavored margaritas. It said nothing about that on the menu. I was appalled! When the menu states a price, it should be that price! I just paid the bill and got out of there. I will never ever go back there. DO NOT GO HERE EVER.
Best Mexican restaurant in the city. Been going to this restaurant with my family for years. Service is fantastic and the food is excellent every time. A must try for anyone !
Will never eat there again. Food took 1 hr and 45 mins to get to us, the veggies were tasteless, cold and MOLDY! Others with me had various issues and we asked to speak with the manager who wouldn’t come up to speak with us. She Left! the restaurant. But get this…the waitress was terrified. She started to cry and said that the manager was going to take this out on her!!! Not acceptable! Someone should put that manager in her place. You don’t treat patrons and employees like scum!
We couldn’t even eat there because as we were being seated the manager was giving one of the servers a bawling out for some perceived infraction, I have no idea what. The poor girl had tears running down her face while the manager insulted her for whatever mistake she had made and then called her a “brain-dead little drama queen” and told her she had a “rotten attitude” for crying.
Rude comments were heard coming from the owner in the kitchen, not directed at the staff this time but at a customer standing by the counter (me). I felt like bawling back at her “I can hear you, you know”. The wait staff noticed the shocked look on my face and tried to sympathise.
Food was ok, but too pricey.
I was visiting from out-of-Province. Quintanas has really gone downhill, the overweight old harridan of a manager or owner sent me upstairs although the restaurant was empty, the place is looking a bit dirty and bedraggled, and the food is dry, microwaved and or covered in cheap cheese product. You can get good Mexcican products in-store and do better than these amateurs do, I can’t understand why anyone would bother with this place. It needs new owners and managers to revive the place.
