80 Kenmount Road, St. John’s

From wikipedia:
“Montana’s Cookhouse is a Canadian restaurant headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario. There are restaurants located in Canada from coast to coast in addition to US locations in Michigan and New York State. The original name was Montana’s Cookhouse Saloon, but when the restaurants entered the states the name Saloon was removed because it was not the image they wanted for it. The theme of the restaurant is of a lodge/wilderness setting and they are known in Canada for their Ribs and other lodge fare. The restaurant aims to be a family/casual concept, rather than fine dining. Recently, CARA has promoted Montana’s with a new set of TV ads consisting of a mounted buck and moose hunting trophies conversing about the restaurant, and a lot more is being spent on promoting the concept. The original idea was thought up by Kelsey’s inc. owner Paul Jeffrey and President Nils Kravis, but is now owned by CARA foods. It’s current president is Andy O’Brien. The chain is owned by Cara Operations.”

No matter how many times I try it I just can’t bring myself to like it. Montanas always leaves me disappointed. Their appetizers and desserts are fine but the entrees fall short.

I have to say the atmoshpere I love, the food isn’t bad I loved the spicy tomato shrimp they use to do but took it off the menu the caesars are awesome, just don’t whatever you do try and go on a friday suppertime or anyday suppertime really, Kenmount kids club or Calcutta. just avoid, you’be been warned. Sun night or sat afternoon you might be safe

I always go here with my sister and friends. I as well as my friend, absolutely love it. Servers are always nice, our favorite is their veggie burger. Plus they have newer options, with the sad dismay the super hot wedges are gone. I love it and will always go back.

Blechh! The worst food, tasteless and fattening.

  7. The Unknown Critic · July 6, 2006

What happened!!!! is all I can say portions have gotten smaller and service slower very surpised… was a regular visitor around every six months…

last time we when there “daily Veg” is now just a big stick of brocoli what not love for mix veg???the corn bread half the size and the wings smaller although ribs and sauce still the same was not happy as we have been with past visits…

We will have to think about our next vist not sure when that will be…to bad

i’ve been there probably four times and every time it was really good. the service has always been attentive, and the entrees delicious and hot. the deepfriend cheesecake is amazing! not a complaint, although i have heard that they’ve gone downhill and i haven’t gone there in probably 7 months. my aunt had a shrimp salad with blueberries on one occasion (i forget the actual name) but i would reccommend that if you’re looking for something a little lighter, it was so tasty.

I like the blechh comment… and concur! Terrible food and way over priced. People will eat anything obvioulsy…and pay high prices for it!

  10. Steven · July 6, 2006

I went there a few weeks ago with my girlfriend, they had the best ribs i have had in a while, reasonably priced, and we signed up online before we went and got a coupon for a free appetizer, definitely will go again.

Firecracker Burger was amazing. One of the best burgers I have had in this city. Service, meh.

  12. Sophie McNeil · July 6, 2006

i freakin love montanas. the service is beyond. Beyond excellent that is. My favorite is the goat cheese penne. Something everyone should experience. Service was superb and efficient. I feel like the servers make an honest effort to make sure that my overall dinning experience is “special”. Dessert wise, the toffee puddings alright… cookie skillet is absolutely delicious. Highly recommended :)

Went for lunch. It was alright. Firecracker burger was pretty yummy, but the place is tacky and the service is in your face. Irritating. I won’t be any hurry to return.

  14. anon · July 6, 2006

The burger I ordered had a piece of hard white plastic in it. When I pointed it out to the staff they called the manager over. He seemed suspicious as if I had put it there on purpoe and then offered me a voucher for some money off my NEXT meal. The coupon specifically said not to be used on the same day. What kind of service is that? there was plastic in my food – I should have either gotten another burger or a free meal. I could have choked!!

This is Montana’s, by! It’s a cookhouse saloon! Man up and eat the damn plastic!

  16. Anonymous · July 6, 2006

Well I suggest you stick to The Sprout. This place is for meat-eaters.

Finally, a good plasticarian restaurant in town.

  18. Peggy · July 6, 2006

I find the service is really good at Montana’s – very friendly, professional and CONSISTENT, which is a real rarity in this town. The food is okay for what it is…typical big-chain food…big portions. I don’t love the food but it certainly fills the gut if that’s what you’re in the mood for!

  19. Catherine · July 6, 2006

We eat at Montana’s on Kenmount all the time! Great service, great food. The (very few) times we have had anything go wrong, the manager has personally made sure that it was made right. Pulled pork sandwich is the best!

I ordered takeout from Montana’s last night. Me and a friend both got a quarter chicken/half rack dinner. I ate the chicken last night and one of the sides, it was moist and delicious. The ribs I saved for today and just threw them in a covered pan with a little water to get it hot again. It cost around $30 each, but that’s not unreasonable at all for what was effectively two meals in a takeout box each.

The only thing I didn’t like was the corn bread. More like corn cake. Fluffy and super sweet. I grew up on real cornbread having a mom from Tennessee. But I guess that’s what they push as cornbread.

Overall, I give it a solid B. Would go again.
