St. John’s North Candidate Interview: Dale Kirby (NDP)

It took a lot of work, but we managed to track down most of the St. John’s area candidates for the 2011 provincial election and asked them about the key issues, why they should be trusted, and what their favourite TV show was when they were kids.

It was 3 o clock in the afternoon and I hadn’t eaten lunch.
Popped in, couldn’t dedide what to get without ruining my dinner. The lady (MARY???) recommended a kids meal, which consisted of fries, a drumstick, a pepsayy and a cookie and it hit the spot dead on. I didn’t get the whole stoggedup feeling I usually get from eating fast food. It was delicious and nutritious!! Mary beats the Colonel!

Went to the Blackmarsh Road location for lunch and had the chicken fingers and taters. Was absolutely delicious. Not greasy, fingers were juicy, and everything was piping hot. Service was quick and friendly.

    Mary Browns: Paradise Location

Over the last two months or so, the food at this location has certainly gone downhill 100%.

Today, wanting to give this location one LAST try, I purchased a 4 pc meal. I have to say it was the WORST meal I had ever eaten there. The chicken tasted old, as if it had been sitting there in the warmer for several hours longer than it should have been.
I asked for FRESHLY cooked fries so it would be HOT, and they were no where near hot. The Coleslaw tasted like it was made and left in the cooler for the last 6 months.
The only thing good about the meal was the can of pop, not made my Mary Brown’s.

While the service was excellent, I didn’t go there because of the service. I went because it was close to supper time and I wanted a HOT, tasty meal. I did not receive this at all.

In the past 2 months or so, the quality of food had greatly deteriorated. Because of this, Mary Brown’s in Paradise will not be keeping me or my family as dedicated customers we once were.
I have traveled from Newfoundland to Alberta, stopping at many different Mary Browns locations and I have to say once again, that Paradise Location is the worse restaurant for food quality. Such a shame too, because Mary Brown’s is known for the Quality and Freshness of food. Chicken, taters and gravy in addition to coleslaw tastes old. Nothing fresh about it at all.

Needless to say I am giving this location 2 thumbs DOWN :(

I’m a regular at the Mary Brown’s Topsail Rd. outlet – the one near New World Fitness Gym. This place must be busy or maybe they take extra care as it has the best chicken and taters of any Mary Brown’s. Okay the Gander TCH outlet is a close second but for overall service and best tasting meal, it is Topsail Rd. Once they did mix up my order, luckily I do not live far from the outlet. Once out of 8 years worth of ordering – now that’s not bad! Hell, that’s great!

Went to Mary Brown’s in labrador City, wasn’t impressed. I purchased the 8 piece meal…my husband ate the whole 8 pieces himself!!! The chicken was so small…what in the world happened to the chicken! I really hope they improve soon…I won’t be back until they do!

I will comment on the location in Torbay, as that is where most of my Mary Brown’s experiences have been. The biggest complaint I have is the ignorance and lack of flexibility by the staff. In recent visits I asked for pieces with all white meat and made it clear that it was not a problem to pay extra for this. They quickly snapped at me and said, how can we give you all white pieces because there won’t be any for the customers when they come in. Excuse me, I thought I was a customer, and I thought the customer is always right, especially if they say that the additional cost is not an issue. Could they not simply put on another batch of chicken if they run low on a particular item like white meat. And they charge a whopping 25 cents for one of those little containers of honey with about a spoonful in it. Let’s be reasonable here. Give the customer what they want, it’s not hard to figure out they want hot good food, good service and a bit of flexibility to provide the kind of chicken pieces requested. I don’t go back here anymore due to the bad service and treatement and downright contempt for a customer. I hope the owner/manager reads this and does something about it. For now, I try the local restaurant (eat in or take out) just up the road and have been treated with respect and actually got some decent food there. Cheers!

I made an order for delivery a little more than 3 hours ago at the Mary Brown’s on Freshwater Road. No one showed up. When I called to ask where my food was an hour and a half after making the order they told me that the delivery guy would be there any minute. An hour and a half after that I called again and the lady on the other end snapped that no one was home at my house and my phone was out of order when they tried to call it.

They had taken down the wrong address and the wrong phone number. Not only did I get an apology but she insisted that I told her the wrong street number– I know where I live!!

I’ll be careful in giving a good review here. I love, love LOVE their chicken, taters and gravy. KFC has nothing on this. It costs more, but the extra dollar or two (or three) is worth it. I can’t speak to every location’s good reputation, but Freshwater, Blackmarsh and Topsail (by New World Fitness) generally don’t disappoint. I’ve found nothing but bad experiences with Paradise locations of anything (McDonalds, Tims), and Torbay doesn’t really surprise me. I guess my advice to anyone who’s never had MB before is to stick to the City … ?
