Delicious food, terrible service.

Food is okay, but overpriced with long lines. It’s a major tourist trap.

Good basic food but a bit overpriced. The lemon pie, however, is to die for!!!

If your looking for that old style fish and chips, this is the place to go! If your craving grease you should also look into stopping by. Walking into this Ches’s was like walking into my grandma’s house, not in a good way. Major need of some major updating. My girlfriend and I both ordered the fish, the fish itself was good. The fries were typical, enjoyable if your seeking that sort of food. A bit greasy. Considering I live on the ocean I would figure the fish would cost a lot less than what was presented. I think it would be more enjoyable if there were more selection of fish than just cod. Price wise it was okay but i still think it was rather pricey. I’ve worked at a fish and chip shoppe before and portion sizes were a lot bigger. Service was shit!!! We didn’t get knives with our meal nor did they serve lemon with our fish, I thought those two things were standard with any meal. Our waitress at the time did not check on us once at all during our meal. Overall it was okay, not great. We only left a tip due to the fact that our waitress at the time was pregnant and we felt it would be wrong not to. If I were to go back I would probably just get take out instead of dining in.

Great fish, but nothing too special. They really need to fix the name. the name should be Ches’, not Ches’s.

What’s in a name? I can remember picking up fish and chips at Ches’ place since the 1960′s, and no matter where you go and mention that you are from Newfoundland people will say,”we had a great meal of fish and chips in St. John’s. I have also met tourists over the years who have mentioned a local chip stand in Wesleyville, Bonavista Bay ” Lewis Carter’s Chip stand” They can still taste the brown vinegar.
People always remember the taste and atmosphere, and not always the quantity. Smoke that in your pipe!

They deep fry with veggie oil which is really good, but they deep fry the chicken with the fish. I do not eat indoor farm raised processed chicken, only organic free range animals. So i can’t eat their fish and chips :(

Overrated!!! The Ship or The Duke of Duckworth are both fr superior to Ches’ aand at a lower price!

Delicious, comforting food. The 2 piece fish and chips meal is awesome and is very filling. Also, the Chocolate Sam drink is really good!

It is called Ches’ and not Ches’s.

In the bizarre grammatical world of fish and chips, it is, in fact, Ches’s.

when I moved back to Newfoundland two years ago, I was really excited to be able to have Ches’s whenever I wanted, but after my latest visit I am DONE! can you say unpeeled onions in the onion rings! Blech.

The best FISH and CHIPS I ever had was at a F&C restaurant in OAKVILLE Ontario. Excellent food, excellent service very clean and modern decor for a F&C restaurant. As a NLer I started to feel embarrased. Imagine if any of these customers visit NL and visit a F&C restaurants; they would still be laughing. We have a long way to go!!!
Most time our F&C over-battered the fish, pile up luke warm fries which are days old, and you can’t find your fish!!!
We have along way to go.

Ches’ is most definitely overrated. My Brother got a medium fries once and barely had 15 fries on his plate. It seemed like a joke at first. I ordered again tonight (I’m not sure why), I haven’t ordered in a while, but my fries were completely dry with just the dressing, when I asked for gravy. They claimed that they added it but it must have been a spoonful of gravy if anything as the only thing that seemed to have gravy was a portion of the dressing.
I work in retail, so customer complaints and irrationalities are a daily thing, but, there’s no doubt that this place is really expensive for the taste and quality of the food. For $5, you can just go to Mom’s Place in the Avalon Mall for equal fish and chip quality, and bigger servings.

Who doesn’t have a Ches’ craving now and again?! It’s good for what it is. Had a small fries/dressing/gravy the other night with lots of dark vinegar, was delicious and plenty of food. You can definitely get better food around, but it’s a NL institution. I’ll be back for my next grease craving.

food is overpriced. delivery takes forever.

Ches’s is a very average greasy spoon joint that has been living on its name and “reputation” for far too long and they seem to have become complacent.
It’ll set you back about 15 bucks for two piecer of fish with fries and gravy. The food always seems overly greasy and the service is always less than stellar.
These guys need to shape up.

I’m from Oakville and I know the F&C place you’re talking about, it’s excellent!
Too funny.

I’m really not a prude. I consider myself to enjoy healthy meals but every so often I give in and have something greasy. I willingly know what Ches’s offers, but having it for the first time in years was a surprise. It was way too greasy for me. I would suggest they would offer some sort of a healthy alternative, have an option for half of everything (batter, starch, deep fried intensity). Spent one day of my vacation on the couch thinking I was gonna die.

Terrible! Dirty, greasy and over priced! What a mess!
August 6th, 2012 at 3:38 pm
This is why I go there for the chicken tenders and not the fish, unless its the salmon. The chicken tenders are always moist and I cannot get enough of them! I’m so busy eating the chicken that I only sometimes manage to finish the fries, they’re mediocre at best. However, they’re onion rings are delicious! I just wish the fish, chicken and onion rings weren’t all fried in the same batter/oil. It all tastes the same. They’re snowballs are TO DIE FOR. I’ve gone in there and just bought the snowballs before, totally worth it. Also, nice touch with the e-coupons and the birthday meals now!

I really don’t understand why so many people actually like this place, there are MUCH better places to get deep fried cod and fries (Humphry’s India battered cod, soooo good!). If that is your specialty, then it should be amazing. I could make better chips n fish at home. Don’t waste your money here.

Awful service. Tried to get delivery and it took them close to two hours when I was quoted forty-five minutes. When I checked on the status of my order they didn’t seem to care that it was taking so long. Foods’ okay but the duke or anywhere downtown is better.
