I’ve never timed it right for the all-you-can eat sushi, but I’ve tried some of the Chinese dishes. The Beef & Green pepper as well as the Seasonal Mixed Vegetable weren’t bad, but I’d probably opt for sushi next time. (The only place in town, or probably anywhere, to have a Rockstar Roll) With all the little extras like bottomless green tea, the bowl of yummy miso soup and the chocolate after dinner mint makes it feel like pretty good value, although the Chinese dishes weren’t as much an adventure as I’d hoped.
Their all-you-can-eat sushi is a little disappointing. Too many mayonnaise / spicy rolls. The spicy avocado roll was nice though.
I finally tried the all-you-can-eat sushi and wasn’t impressed. The selection is limited to mostly vegetarian rolls, and the salmon & tuna ones which are available are pumped full of spicy mayo. I’d rather shell out the coin for a smaller portion of better quality sushi that hits the spot right on.
I often get sushi-to-go from Asian Taste – it always tastes good, fresh, and packed with as much wasabi and soysauce as I request… Yummy :)
Wondering though, when is this ‘all-you-can-eat’ sushi? I’d like to give that a shot…
I’m a fan of Asian Taste. I’ve always found the service excellent. I’ve never seen the bottom of my mug – They constantly fill it with delicious green tea. I guess that’s the only thing I can fault them for: I use the green tea to fuel my metabolism to ravage their buffet. Suckers.
I can see what the above posters are talking about – the buffet is a bit limited (no dragon roll? garn.) But there’s enough on it to keep me entertained till I get full, which takes quite a while.
It’s been a while since I’ve had the non-buffet sushi, but I remember being really happy with it and being very impressed with the price, though that could have increased since.
Overall I’m very happy with the place and do all of my sushiing there.
ok, we used to come here almost every weekend to get all you can eat sushi. What I liked about it was the drink was included in the all you can eat, so you paid like $20 flat for dinner. Now the drink isn’t included, not too happy about that.
Also, I have noticed that, like many other sushi places I have been to, “all you can eat” turns into “how much rice can we fit on each sushi roll while maintaining the same amount of filling?”. $20 isn’t that cheap for dinner, so please don’t “trick” us by making us fill up on rice and not giving us what we pay for.
Other than that, it’s a nice setting, pretty good sushi, is actually open on Sundays, and the prices aren’t bad if you avoid the All you can Eat option.
The buffett is filled with deep-fried items to fill you up. Their maki and salmon rolls are fat, but mostly because of rice. Wish their buffett menu had more sushi roll varieties on it.
A friend & I ate there tonight for their all-you-can-eat buffett & I must say I enjoyed it very much! The service was great; very prompt. The food was also very very fresh. Perhaps that’s because we went right at 5, but who cares. The food left such a great impression on me! Pi Pizza use to be my #1 but I think Asian Taste took the cake with tonight’s meal!
could someone write about the korean dishes, PLEASE?!?
I’ll be coming back home from T-Rot sometime soon and would love to have my wet dreams come to life in a bowl of Dolsut Bibimbap…
Although the food is pretty tasty, the selection is not good enough for the price you need to pay. The overall service leaves much to be desired. When a customer says “thank you”, should not the response be “you’re welcome”? Evidently not at Asian Taste… Moreover, the general attitude of the server was very cold; I did not see any smile on his face during the whole evening. Finally, the highlight of the night was the cashiers’ response after saying Thank you and paying the bill …SILENCE!!!We went to Asian taste a few times before and the service was good. But after our experience this time, we will not go back again.
I think the service was great when I was there, but havent been in a while. I loved getting curry and rice and I love curry! I liked their spin on sushi, I dont think as good compared to traditional sushi. The one thing that annoyed me was the lack of korean food..where is the kimchi, kimbap, bulgogi?! Bulgogi is the most popular and they dont have it. I even make it, so if I can, I am sure they can! I think there should be a Korean restaurant in St.John’s!!
i think its great
i think the mix of chinese korean and japanese dishes offered is pretty good
you can’t possibly expect them to have every dish from each of those cultures on the menu. in fact if you ask them about something thats not on the menu , they usually have it or make it. i know that goes for the kimchi at least. i’ve even came up with some random combinations of stuffings for my sushi and they’ll do it no problem
i have never been there taht i havent seen the waiter smilling and in good spirits, and for the crazy amount of time that he spends there its pretty amazing.
i will agree that it was much better when the drink and ice cream were included in the all you can eat price
The Unknown Critic
Very good my wife and I enjoyed it very much
As this is a review tempura batter a little heavy also I found calimari breadin a little heavy…Soft deep fried tofu amazing…I had sushi box and my wife have chicken cutlet box enjoyed both next time I will request no mackrel in my box
Soup as a starter was excellent on a cool wednesday afternoon
Service was excellent also as this is a review the food came a litte slow at lunch so don’t be in a hurry we were there for casual lunch so it did not bother us and the pepsi class was kept full at all time
will be returning as long as the place never changes overall great experince!
There is no bibimbap, sadly :( They don’t have a hot pot either damnit! I don’t think you can get either in St. John’s :(
I enjoyed this place very much. I ordered off of their “all you can eat” menu. Service was great! I’m not a lover of sushi, however I did enjoy the other things they had on the menu. My boyfriend and brother who joined me very much enjoyed the service and food, especially the sushi for them.
A very pleasant experience, will go back for sure!
love this restaurant! i think im there every week, or just about. its better than sun sushi – the service is better and the complimentary soup is way better! they have similar menus but asian taste tends to have a wider selection of non-sushi items, which is good if your bringing someone unsure if theyre going to like it.
This is my fave restaurant, hands down! I go there a few times a month. Though I’m there a little less since my favorite waiter left. According to the owner he went back to China. He always said hello and welcomed us, and when we would leave, he always said “See you next week!” Unfortunately, now the service is not quite as good. I find the remaining staff sometimes don’t understand your order, which I get, but to not be in the least apologetic when you point it out, or worse yet, to make it seem like your fault, is not acceptable.
The all you can eat menu is great, but then again, I love the spicy sauce they serve. When I order from the menu, the deluxe rainbow roll is the way to go!
As far as know, the owner is changed. The present owner doesn’t wanna customers know that which I cannot figure out. I like the korean food there. However, since last time the owner’s wife who was serving was unfriendly to my friend, we never come back again.
Not a big fan of this place. I find the servers to be awkward and the sushi is not great.
Don’t eat there. I know four people who have gotten food poisoning from the sushi. Seriously. It’s sketch.
I LOVE ASIAN TASTE!! their sweet and sour salmon dish is the most delicious thing I’ve ever put in my mouth! the service and food are always great, miso soup is a yummy start and the crispy fried dumplings are incredible!
Not the fan at all. The server was horrible. The sushi was not good as before.
The Neon Light rolls were AMAZING. So delicious. I have eaten sushi in places other than Newfoundland, mainly Toronto, and I always liked it. But the Neon Light rolls at Asian Taste BLEW MY TASTEBUDS. So good. Definitely recommend. And the service was awesome!
Always great service–the avocado salad is delicious.
Since the new management has taken over this place has gone downhill. No more free eggdrop soup, and the quality of food and service has gone downhill.
Asian Taste has the friendliest service ever! They have delicious food, such as the red snapper roll, and the spicy tuna. The first appetizer on the menu (beef something) is also really good. They have come a long way since they first opened a few years ago. I highly recommend it.
I ate at Asian Taste recently for the first time. The miso soup was incredible, the avocado salad was incredible. The sushi was not as good as Sun Sushi, in my opinion. I ate it all and felt good about the meal, but Sun Sushi just simply did the same dish better. I had spicy salmon maki. At Sun Sushi it’s a little more crunchy, which is something I’ve really come to love. At Asian Taste there was too much salmon and pretty much nothing else in the roll. Odd complaint, I know.
The service…..BLEW ME AWAY! At Sun Sushi the service is garbage at best. At Asian Taste we were greeted, the server was super friendly, had huge glasses of water (probably twice the size you’d get at Sun Sushi) on our tables within a couple of minutes of seating. If only their spicy salmon was a little more like Sun Sushi’s, I would NEVER set foot in Sun Sushi again.
While asian taste used to be my absolute favorite, lately ive gone to sun sushi for my fix more often. The new owner has changed some things that had always made asian taste a little better than sun sushi. The buffet times/selection, type of free soup, some of the menu items, etc. I miss the old waiter that was always there!
bring back egg drop soup! :(
I love this place. Great food, great service and great pricing. Don’t bother with the all you can eat get the fresh stuff and you’ll be pleased. Best sushi in town.
My Husband and I used to go to Sun Sushi, but after horrible service time and time again there, this is our new sushi spot.
We’ve never had the “all you can eat”, but the fresh made sushi has always been great. I’ve had a few of their other entrees – teriyaki chicken, pineapple chicken and have been pleased with them.
We used to go when I was very pregnant and then again with our small baby and the staff there have been very baby friendly! Which is a plus :)
Slow and rude. Stick to Basho.
there is a new Korean Restaurant in the downtown area now
Absolutely terrible service.
i’ve been there once, got the asian flower which i’m pretty sure is salmon avocado rolls. it was probably the best sushi i’ve tasted in st. john’s. i’ve wanted to go back to get more ever since!
Recently went for the first time. Service was awful – we were standing for 10 minutes just waiting for someone to show us to a table. We were warned that the sushi would take a while (ordered a big plate) so we requested a tempura appetizer to hold us over. Surprise, neither dish showed up for 45+ minutes. One of our orders was wrong and they simply said “no, you ordered the salmon, not the chicken.” We didn’t want to argue or wait another half-hour – luckily the salmon was tasty as well. But way way overpriced for things that are easily made at home ($5 for an avocado salad? really?) and while the food was tasty, it just wasn’t worth the coin, especially for the slim selection.
We hadn’t been here in a little while and gave it a try this week. The edamame comes in huge, fresh portions, and are only $3.50. The spicy korean soup was really flavourful and also only $3.50. Hubby had the black pepper beef stirfry and really like it. I wouldn’t come here for sushi again though – the ingredients were nice and fresh, but the rice wasn’t done properly at all – very wet and hard, not at all how sushi rice is supposed to be. I’ll stick to Sun Sushi for that.
But we found the service great and very freindly on the night we went and will likely be back soon for some of the other affordable, tasty little treats we had.
DON’T EVEN BOTHER WITH THIS PLACE! But if you like being chewed out because of the amount of food you order/the time that you order it/for sharing a spoonful of soup with another one of your dining friends/enjoy being stared down as your sushi is being made for you, then this is the spot for you! If I could give this restaurant any less than a star I would. The treatment from the owner and female sushi chef was absolutely embarassing for us. I don’t go out to dinner to be made to feel like a 5 year old who isn’t playing fair with the other kids. Save your money and keep walking on down the block to Sun Sushi. And while their service isn’t that great either, it can’t be as bad as it is at Asian Taste.
The only positive thing about the entire place? Our waitress was a delight and was thoroughly mortified at how we were treated. I feel awful that she finds it necessary to work for these employers.
I’ve eaten at Asian Taste a thousand times since moving here and I haven’t been disappointed yet. I’m in love with pretty much everything on their menu, and I love the quaint atmosphere. Anyone who says their service is bad is crazy – I’ve never left there without on a smile on my face. The staff is endlessly friendly and attentive. While their sushi isn’t as fine a quality as that at Sun Sushi, I’d still rather go to Asian Taste for the atmosphere alone!
Wonderful service, very personal and friendly, and really great and affordable vegetarian/vegan sushi! Love it!
So Bad, the food not fresh. I will never go there again.
My husband and I have eaten here once a week for a long time and have never been disappointed. The sushi is awesome, and the dinner combos are delicious and well priced. The owner has never been anything but super friendly, as well as all the other employees. I have never had to wait a long time, and have waited well over 30 minutes at Sun Sushi several times for just a roll. The Seoul Dumpling soup is to die for and the eel roll is fantastic. Give it a try, you won’t be sorry you did.
I went to Asian Taste this week and i can’t say anything bad about the place. Im assuming the owner was the one who served me and he couldn’t have been more friendly and kind. He had a huge smile on his face the entire time.
The spicy dumpling soup was amazing. Plus i had two rolls. Not bad for $20. I will come back for sure next time I’m in St. John’s.
To be fair it is a business, they cant just give away free food from the buffet if you didnt pay for it! they would go bankrupt pretty quickly. You pay for the buffet, you eat the buffet. You pay for the menu, you eat what you order.
I’ve never gone back again since they charged me $4 dollars for the tip, even though I wrote down $3 on the receipt. I guess I just hate the feeling of money being stolen, not about that $1.
. I’ve always preferred Asian Taste to Sun Sushi until a visit this past weekend. No soap in the bathroom, inattentive service, Christmas decorations still up, and worst of all TERRIBLE sushi. The sushi was warm, the salmon a little off colour, and the sashimi looked like it was cut with a butter knife. I walked away unwilling to eat my meal. Suffice it to say the quality has tanked and i assume it’s since the manager left. I ate there about 30 times so considered myself a loyal customer but that has come to an end. Steer clear folks…you don’t mess around with raw fish!
Probably the worst sushi I’ve had, and I’ve had some bad sushi. The tuna was black, the beef dish I ordered was more like a beef-like substance (the texture of beef jerky) covered in a terrible sweet & salty sauce. The soup’s only vegatables was carrots/cabbage. The roll I ordered equally bad. Total price $50. I could have gotten a pretty fine steak & sushi dinner in Toronto for that much. Will never go here again.
Was at Asian taste last night. As a former regular to the restaurant the quality of food/service has definitely gone way downhill since the old owner left (and even more downhill since the owner before that). The soup tasted like 99.9% water and a dab of gross seasoning, they were out of some menu items I ordered, and when I got the food it just wasn’t as good as I remember. The bathroom was dirty and the place just isn’t kept up as it used to be. Sun Sushi will soon have to expand if Asian Taste keeps this up……
This is the worst Asian restaurant in the downtown core…they are trying to cater to everything Asian (which I get is the point) yet are good at none of it. If you like Korean, go to J-Korea. You like Sushi? Go to Sun Sushi. Chinese? go to Magic Wok.
On top of it all, the service is crap. I actually don’t understand how they stay in business while a place like Simplicity goes under. Shocking.
The “ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT” will be served every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Ate there twice. First time was ok. Second time was terrible. Terrible to the point that I will not be returning. They brought out the wrong order twice. Brought out the right order about 2 hours later. Everyone’s food was slow, but when mine showed up everyone was finished. By this point I was ready to leave. So, I guess I didn’t even eat there twice, I’ve just BEEN there twice. The worst part, they did not even apologize. So rude!
My wife and I ate there today and both found the food great. vegetables were fresh, the food properly cooked and the portions were plenty. we had sushi, grilled salmon, grilled chicken, rice and salid. The service was fast and friendly.
The price was great for the amount and quality of food we tasted, I have paid more for less quality meals at fancier restaurants in town compared to here. We hope to eat there again someday soon. The people who had a bad experience in the past should give it a second chance.
Will not return!
My bf and I went there a few days ago and were very disappointed with both the food and the service. Some of the food tasted bad and when we told the waiter, he was very rude. The service was probably the wost I have experienced in the city. I will definitely not go back!
Owner why are you rude?
I was a little skeptical when I read the comments above, and expect the worst. It wasn’t, however bad at all. The service was great, even though it was a busy weekend night. The sushi is fresh and delicious – better than other sushi places in town, and there are plenty to choose from. We have also ordered some other dishes, and they tasted great too. The waiter was friendly, and I enjoyed it all. The price was reasonable, considering how much we ordered.
I will definitely return for the all-you-can-eat next time.
The Scope is no more! Thanks for seven amazing years.
