The Knife with Mt. Sims & Planningtorock
Tomorrow, In A Year
Four years after their last album, Silent Shout, which inspired a mass-music-critic orgasm, The Knife have released Tomorrow, in a Year, a collaborative project between them and fellow weirdos Mt. Sims & Planningtorock. Tomorrow, In a Year is an opera based on Charles Darwin and The Origin of the Species, although that’d be hard to figure out if nobody told you. It’s a gloriously bizarre and epically challenging hour and a half of experimental programming that has the potential to both aggravate and satisfy the expectations of anyone in their fanbase. The opera slowly evolves from Stockhausen-inspired soundscapes to more confrontational pieces featuring the phenomenal voice of mezzo-soprano Kristina Momme, and ends with the doomy, hypnotic electro that you’d expect from The Knife. It’s a deeply dense and difficult album to dig into, but it richly rewards those with patience and a love of uncompromising weirdness.
