Last week I featured a piece on The Random Act of Kindness fundraiser for the victim of a violent beating this past summer. Well this week one of the organizers of that benefit finds himself in need of a few sips from the cup of human kindness. On Sunday, Oct 14th, owner/operator of The Levee and stalwart supporter of the local music scene Gene Browne could only watch helplessly as his house burned to the ground. Not long after the tragedy, fellow Random Act of Kindness organizer and Temples/Georgie & JoMo member George Newman began rounding the troops and put out an open call to the local music community to come to Gene’s aid. As a result of these efforts two fundraiser gigs for Gene and his girlfriend Robyn will be held this Saturday (Oct 20th). One show will be at The Rock House and feature The Navigators, Lunge, The Rising Design, RUST (Neil Young Tribute) and DC3 (Hendrix Tribute). The second show which was just added yesterday will be held at The Ship with a line-up of Johnny Am I Good, Elizabeatans, Man The Animal, East of Empire and Pathological Lovers.
As if that wasn’t enough, George also put out the call for local musicians to donate a song for a compilation album to be sold via Bandcamp as a further fundraiser for Gene and Robyn. Within little more than a day songs began flooding in. The resulting is the triple album Let Me Stand Next To Your Fire: A Compilation For Gene and Robyn. The album contains 30 songs from local acts like Monsterbator, Long Distance Runners, Pilot to Bombardier, Sonny Tripp, Jerry Stamp and the author of today’s track The Glendas, just to name a few. Some of the songs are from the artists albums others are unreleased or rare tracks but all thirty are amazing and for an incredible cause.
You can download this awesome compilation album for a donation of $10 or more. Also, drop by The Ship or The Rockhouse this Saturday (Oct 20th) to show your support and help Gene and Robyn get back on their feet while having a time and taking in some great music in the process.
