Spring Breakup are the Yukon-based songwriting duo of Mathias Kom (of The Burning Hell) and Kim Barlow (of Kim Barlow) who are taking their obsession for breakup songs on the road across Canada. I played a show with them last Thursday at the Eastern Edge Gallery and was thoroughly charmed. It was the most intimate show I’ve seen in a long time — so intimate they didn’t even bother using any amplification at all, and with such a small room and captivated audience it wasn’t really necessary. Their songs have a really strong current of black comedy and clever wordplay, but for some reason or another I ended up taking videos of their two most serious songs, which I think they turned out pretty decent even if they’re pretty echo-y videos.
