On behalf of local music lovers I would like to extend thanks to Mightypop owners Jud Haynes & Krista Power, who since 2008 have been bringing some of the best acts I’ve ever seen right here to perform in Newfoundland. Because of them, over the years I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing shows by some of my favorite artists, such as Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Bruce Peninsula, Julie Doiron, Jenn Grant, and Bahamas, to name a few.
And this month they’ve done it again. This week they are bringing one of the most dynamic bands in the world, Thee Silver Mount Zion, to play two nights (Tuesday, August 7th and Wednesday, August 8th) at LSPU Hall.
Since forming in Montreal in 1999, Thee Silver Mount Zion have gone through several name and line-up changes exemplifying the evolving nature of the band and their sound. The group was founded by Efrim Menuck, of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and also includes David Payant (drums, vocals), Sophie Trudeau (violin, vocals), Jessica Moss (violin, vocals), Thierry Amar (bass, vocals) and a host of other musicians who have come and gone over the years. As you’ll be able to hear from today’s track (a live performance of “There Is A Light” from their album Kollaps Tradixionales (2010)) Thee Silver Mount Zion’s sound is both intimate and engaging, but still has serious bombastic intensity. Don’t miss this incredible band at LSPU Hall on Tuesday (August 7th) and Wednesday (August 8th). Tickets are available online via LSPU Hall’s website.
