“No Way Out” by Monotone Jones

“No Way Out” by Monotone Jones
In keeping with this weeks rap theme, today’s track comes from one of St. John’s smoothest MCs, Monotone Jones (AKA Jon Brown). Jon got the attention of local music fans in 2011 when he released his RPM album Cracker Rocks. The record cleverly bends genres mixing Jon’s seamless lyrical flow with hints of alt-rock, blues and jazz. Like most great rap albums it also features a who’s-who of guest musicians such as Colonel Craze & The Hunch, Virginia Fudge, Grant Kingston and Justin Guzzwell. Today’s track “No Way Out” fuses a blues rock guitar lead and ominous back beat courtesy of Matt Fudge. It also finds Matt’s sister Virginia providing some soulful chorus vocals to balance out Matt Fudge’s screaming-blue-murder outro. Hopefully we’ll be hearing more from Jon in the near future. In the meantime you can find a cameo from Monotones Jones on the track “Rock The Party” from Elling Lien’s 2012 RPM album Learning Curve.

The game plan

From basements and bedrooms to make-shift recording studios across the Rock (and North America for that matter) people are tuning up for this year’s RPM Challenge. 28 days, 10 songs or 35 minutes: it’s doable, and pure gonzo originality often makes for some compelling listening material. Here’s what some participants said about their plans and intentions for the 28-day undertaking.
