This evening I had the opportunity to attend a photo op at the first of three sold out shows Leonard Cohen is playing in St. John’s. Cohen has been off the road for 14 years now, and based on the little glimpse I had tonight he is returning to the stage in full form. Knowing this makes me all the more excited to attend the show I have tickets for.
The east coast dates (which in St. John’s anyhow sold out in minutes) were meant as warm ups for the world tour – but in the promoters words the shows are already “as good as they will get.” I’d go beyond that and say better for their intimacy. The Holy Heart auditorium is rather cozy after all, espeically for a performer of Cohen’s stature.
It was hard to walk out after the first song (Dance Me To The End of Love) sound tracked down the high school corridor by what sounded like it would be a very spot on delivery of the Future. I’d be absolutely heartbroken if I was not holding tickets. It was one of the more discombobulating experiences I have in recent memory. I do not often start a show that I won’t get to see through to the end, let alone the second song. I have heard that he and his band ruled to the point where the standing ovations began to exhaust at least some of the members of the crowd.
I’m looking forward to being ruled by Leonard and his band in person!
