St. Patrick’s Day Drunk Dial 2009

It’s St. Patrick’s Day, so you might as well call up a strange answering machine and leave a drunken message.

Five years in, and the St. Patrick’s Day Drunk Dial is going stronger than ever. Brainchild of a “non-Irish, Sri Lankan, Newfoundlander living in Montreal”, Duleepa Wijayawardhana (Better known as “Dups”), he started the Drunk Dial by chance. Since he and many of his Newfoundland friends have scattered themselves around the globe, he wanted a way to reconnect in a friendly, fun way, so he asked them to phone him up on St. Patrick’s Day after they had a couple pints in them. Since he wasn’t at the house the whole time, some friends left messages on his answering machine.

“I never counted on the timezones and my own drinking,” he says. “However the stories from what I remember were fantastic. And so was born the St. Patrick‚Äôs Day Drunk Dial.”

In the following years, he set up a phone line for it, and suddenly people from outside his circle of friends started to call. Media did stories on the phenomenon. This year, Dups decided to go all-out and set up a toll-free number, a Facebook group, make a YouTube video, and rent time on the Reuters sign in New York City to let people know about it.

Each call will be published online and the most humorous entry will win a $100 prize. This year there will also be “People’s Choice Award” with a prize of $50.

How else would you best celebrate today but by having fun and spreading the cheer?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everybody: 1-888-734-1285.
