Songwriters Circle and CBC’s Q

Fri, Apr 16, 2010

The madness has begun and people are starting to populate our cozy little city in preparation for the 2010 Juno Awards. More than just one night of celebration, the Junos are stretched into a week of music and events. So much to see! Ruckus on the Edge, the “celebration of Newfoundland and Labrador’s unique culture and unbridled creativity” has been taking place at the Delta hotel that past few evenings. I had the opportunity to get out on Tuesday night and see the second part of the songwriter’s circle comprised of Amelia Curran, Sherman Downey, Maureen Ennis and the host, Ron Hynes, with Phil Churchill (of The Once) introducing.

There was a square stage setup in the middle of the Delta ballroom, with seats surrounding it. It was nice actually, giving it a more intimate feel and each songwriter sat in a corner taking turn song for song.

Wednesday Night was made up of Shanneyganock, The Navigators, The Once and a few others. I popped out for an hour to see what was going on and I just caught the Navigators.

Thursday morning started out with a trip to the MUN Reid Theatre for a live broadcast of CBC Radio Q, with host Jian Ghomeshi – who just so happened to be at the ship pub the night before for a drink and ended up winning one of the door prizes upon minutes of arriving. Coffee rum I believe? The prize was something along those lines.

Back to the show, Allan Hawco and Mark O’Brien were the first guests on air and I have to say, the boys are a good hand and a laugh live. You can see the chemistry these guys have off screen and it goes to show what’s been happening on Doyle the past season as we get further into the story, they just keep getting better.

Next up were St. John’s own Pathological Lovers. These guys played a song live and did one more right after the live broadcast for Qtv on Youtube.

Ron Hynes played a song and as well, afterwards, played one more for the crowd on request.
