Mike Essoudry’s Mash Potato Mashers from Ottawa have been described as a 9-piece horn-powered hurricane. So maybe it’s all too fitting that they’re playing a double feature with Soul Rebels Brass Band from New Orleans, a town that knows a thing or two about tempests. Intentional or no, it’s bound to be an evening of Category 4 fun. The Mashers combine the gale-force power of seven horn players with two drummers, resulting in a whirlwind combination of jazz, klezmer, and Balkan-style tunes. The Soul Rebels Brass Band are a street-style New Orleans combo who deliver infectious, high-intensity jams. Check out YouTube for one of the band’s many it-shouldn’t-work-but-it-does covers of rock and metal classics. Catch both bands at the Wreckhouse International Jazz & Blues Festival show at Club One. The action starts at 9pm and tickets ($36) can be purchased by calling 753-4531.
