Sunday might seem like an odd day to get down to a funky soul groove dance machine, but really, when you think about it, any day is a good day. So instead of spending this one havin’ the old dirty scoff with the family, perhaps you should get the funk out of your house and get the funk down to the Festival of New Dance finale. It will be celebrated simultaneously by b-boys East Rock Crew & Funky Dory. Sound too good to be true? Well it’s not, as Gregory Bruce (of both groups) attests:
“We’ve always wanted to do a show like this together, and we’ve done some stuff like it before on a smaller scale, but nothing like this, so it’s really exciting—there’s never been anything like it in Newfoundland.”
Functions of Funk will display a healthy mix of freestyle jamming, breakdancing and the regular jams: “Rehearsed improvisation,” Greg calls it.
The party commences at the Majestic Theatre, May 27. East Rock Crew are expected to be as thrilling as ever with their breakdance skills, and Funky Dory will be working proudly alongside, displaying their not-even-worth-trying-to-categorize hip-as-shit (but-not-in-that-hipster-way) tunes.
The finale will be held on Sunday, May 27 at the Majestic. 10pm, $20 ($15 for students and seniors). Tickets: 753-4531 or drop down to the LSPU Hall. And you can always pay at the door.
