Creator Dance Theatre is Victoria Wells-Smith’s baby. A 19-year old School of Dance alumna, this program is her first. The goal of the company is to bridge the gap between more obscure modern dance and recital pieces, as well as build an audience for modern dance in the city.
This is the second run of the show, after a June staging at Kittiwake. On the program are a number of new modern dance works by Wells-Smith. The first run was very well-received by dancers and non-dancers alike.
The company was born May 1st, when Linda Rimsay of Kittiwake offered Wells-Smith the studio for a couple evenings’ performances. Within just two months she had assembled a company, choreographed the pieces, rallied a slew of corporate sponsors, and is already taking on the Hall. Wells-Smith jokes about wanting to take the "Cirque du Soleil/Blue Man Group" route to success, and with this kind of enthusiasm and determination it doesn’t seem impossible.
Creator Dance Theatre will be performing at the LSPU Hall July 29 and 30. Shows at 8 p.m., tix $11.
