A major problem is parking is permitted too close to the crosswalks. Drivers can't see pedestrians until they've stepped out past the parked cars, and likewise pedestrians have to walk out and peek past the parked car to see whether it's safe. The crosswalk at Mcurdo's Lane (Duke) and Duckworth Street is particularly bad. I hate driving by here, and I hate walking it even more. It would be interesting to know what the stats for accidents are here.

I think it's time for the city to bring in a bylaw that makes homeowners responsible for clearing the sidewalk in front of their property. These types of bylaws are in place in most municipalities in Canada, why not here?

As someone who walks and drives around in almost equal measures (depending on destination), I experience the problems and frustrations from both sides. The driving here is undoubtedly poor in a lot of cases and I have to agree with much of what is said here to improve safety for pedestrians. I often have to be on my toes to avoid being hit whilst walking home from work.

However, I have to suggest that some of this is toned down bearing in mind that there are bad pedestrians too. Some of the stuff here is only going to alienate the sensible drivers who sympathise with the plight of the pedestrian. For example, when I'm driving, I am well aware of "reality". And what is with the "rocks?" comment? It's clearly unacceptable to throw rocks at cars if we're going to have a sensible discussion on solving the problems....if that is the suggestion....

Furthermore, the pedestrian does not always have the right of way. Read the Newfoundland Highway Traffic Act, section 126 here - http://www.assembly.nl.ca/legislation/sr/statutes/h03.htm#126_
"126. Where a pedestrian is crossing a roadway at a point other than within a crosswalk, the pedestrian shall yield the right-of-way to an approaching vehicle. "

I always stop for a pedestrian on a crosswalk (because it's the law!) but when I'm driving, it is just as frustrating to have the shit scared out of me when someone steps out in front of me on a regular stretch of road without any regard for their own safety. Yes, a driver is required to stop or avoid collision in these cases but the main point of this whole comment is that there has to be a bit of give and take to make improvements work. My own opinion is that both sets of people need better education for happier travels - drivers and pedestrians.

Otherwise and as I said, I agree with the principle of what's being said here.

Love Sun Sushi but am currently completely disappointed with their lack of regard for their customers. They have been inexplicably closed for about a month and a half now, not only this but I was told the would be open on the 8th which i found out today has been changed to the 15th. Due to this i am seriously considering not going back there at al even though it is great food.

Kyle,

I am not sure your comment is fair considering Mark Wilson encouraged everyone to share their vision for St. John's during (and since) the election.
When was the last time any other member of council asked you, or this city, what their vision for St. John's was? Council recently voted against a motion to open the option of reviewing our municipal plan, which is considered a "visioning" document. This means that it will be probably another year, possibly two, before public input is heard on the document which guides development in a very real way here in St. John's.

Lovely decor, great atmosphere, and friendly staff. I went twice shortly after it first opened and found the pizza tasteless.I am a person who would have gourmet pizza any day before Pizza Hut, but I was disappointed the pizza didn't have more flavor. When you go ask for extra topping or cheese or sauce.
Thought I'd give it a second chance and went again, ordered a different pizza and had the same experience. My friend's milk separated in her glass (kind of worrying), it was warm day, but even so...
I'd say try it though and make your own opinion.

I think the Bagel Cafe is mediocre. I have been a few times. I usually order one of the Potato bakes. I find that their fresh vegetables taste like they've been sitting around. The fresh food salad doesn't usually taste fresh either. The prces are a bit expensive for the un-fresh taste. Coffee is okay.
I find it a bit to cozy in there as sometimes you are awkwardly close to other people at other tables, try getting one of the booths or go upstairs.
The staff have always been helpful and friendly.

I have to say out of the Sushi places I've visited Sun Sushi is my favorite. The tea and soup are complimentary with the sushi rolls you order (I think). Someone commented that there is no green tea, however the Genmaicha tea they serve is a combination of green tea and brown rice and is delicious! I have heard that Asian Tastes is good though, so they may have some competition there.

I have to say out of the Sushi places I’ve visited Sun Sushi is my favorite. The tea and soup are complimentary with the sushi rolls you order (I think). Someone commented that there is no green tea, however the Genmaicha tea they serve is a combination of green tea and brown rice and is delicious! I have heard that Asian Tastes is good though, so they may have some competition there.

The Sprout is a great restaurant! First of all kudos should be given for having a vegetarian place that survives in St. John's, and that it is obviously so popular that there are waiting times of 20 minutes or more.

I've never had any problems with my orders or the waiting staff. If anything they are so awesome that I feel shy around them because they are so cool!

I can understand about portion sizes on some of the dishes, however there are other dishes, which will fill you up no problem (try something with rice or pasta). The Sprout salad is divine and fresh. Occasionally they will not have some of the menu items (like the avacado sandwich), but besides that I've never had an issue.

I wish their hours were more stable, often I've turned up only to find out they'd closed early or they weren't open at all.

Yay! Yummy vegetarian restaurant in St. John's!

I don't live in NL right now and haven't been to the restaurant since the summer of 2009, but I always wished that they'd change their menu once in a while for more variety (keeping the favorites, of course).

It's hilarious that Mark Wilson thinks just because there are people that want this city to prosper that they are writing fake comments. Words cannot express how thankful I am that he did not become mayor - so much for opinion and opposition. What do you want our city to look like in 20 years? Hopefully not any different than me! should have been his campaign slogan.

By the way, the pizza pictured is not a Venice pizza. It's a stock photo.
