Nominations for Canada’s most prestigious literary award were announced today, and Newfoundlander Michael Crummey’s novel Galore is in the running for the English-language fiction category. It’s the 50th anniversary for the prize, and the winners will be announced November 17 in Montreal.
From the G-G website: “Michael Crummey’s Galore is a gorgeous and mysterious whale of a book – part multi-generational love story, part riff on the Bible, and part tall tale. Spanning several generations in a remote Newfoundland outport, this story is bursting with fantastical events, colourful characters and delicious dialogue. An unforgettable journey.”

(Am I right in saying this is the first Newfoundland book up for that award since Wayne Johnston’s The Colony of Unrequited Dreams? Probably not. But lemme know in the comments.)

This is wonderful news- Galore is simply, mind bendingly brilliant. I don’t know of any other novels, besides Colony of Unrequited Dreams, but our own Robert Chafe was nominated for a GG for his two plays Butlers Marsh and Tempting Providence in 2004.
