What are the best local ‘mom and pop’ convenience stores?

Elling Lien asked this question on Friday at 4 pm.

I don’t mean ones run just by moms or pops, but independent mini-groceries. And gas stations and chains don’t count.

I grew up in Portugal Cove, where Elaine’s is the big one.

Now I live downtown and Halliday’s is where it’s at. The Market/Moo Moo’s and Asian Variety are further along, but still good.

This question could have been “Where do you buy your beer or smokes?”

My grandparents had a convenience store attached to our house when I was a kid. They used to rent my nintendo games…

Ever since I started living in St. John’s I have been a huge fan of Stockwoods.

Stockwood’s is my neighbourhood convenience store for the past 9 years now, and I hate everything about it. I could go on and list a few of the more noteable things that I loathe about it, but that won’t answer the question you posed, at all. Maybe I could just be in the ’still looking’ category.

In the name of preservation someone should have taken photos of all the neighbourhood stores before they disappeared and did an exhibit (similar to the “Last Stands” taxi stand exhibit that used to be at The Rooms. I lived on Lemarchant Rd in 1996 and had the choice of Mrs. Murphy’s (1 Freshwater Rd) Marions (Barters Hill) Natasha’s (Boncloddy St) Jackman &Green (Cookstown) Long’s Hill Conv ,D&I Convenience (Cabot&Lime) Gregory’s (Pennywell),Maypole (St Clare)most of these are long gone. Im a Westender now so I like to support Cornwall Superette. Walsh’s on St Clare/Mt Pleasant have been around a long time too. Needs/Maries can all eat a bag of dicks.

Thanks for the heads-up on Elaine’s. I’m moving to Portugal Cove in November, so I’ve been wondering whether Elaine’s or the Whale’s Back was the go-to spot.

Here in town, my vote goes to the Cornwall Superette. If you call ahead, they’ll save a bowl of soup for you if you can’t get there at lunchtime!

Ah, I live in Portugal Cove as well and I would choose Whale’s Back because it always has what I’m looking for; the staff are friendly and familiar; the counter wait is shorter because there is always someone behind it; you can rent movies; their name is based on folklore; and they have a Slush Puppie machine.

Elaine’s does have a liquor store but none of what makes Whale’s Back so great exists there.

Caine’s, for those of us in east downtown, is pretty schweet. The staff is really friendly, and the traditional dinners (and shepherd’s pie, etc) they make is deadly.

I only moved dt recently – haven’t been to Halliday’s yet but have had their bacon and eggs. SO good.

Breen’s! @ Kerry St. and Portugal Cove Rd.- most recent operators of a groc/conf that’s been there for 40+ years and one of the best ever. Fabulous soup @ lunch, with a “thanks-m’love” at the checkout.
